Box Score Sanford, Fla., March 13, 2016 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team clinched the sixth University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship in program history with a 15-3 win over New York University Sunday afternoon.
WashU finished the UAA Championship with a 6-2 conference record, one game ahead of Emory University and Case Western Reserve University. The Bears improved to 12-4 on the season with the win, while NYU dropped to 4-9 overall and 2-6 in the UAA. It marks just the second outright UAA title in school history, but the third time in the last four years WashU has claimed at least a share of the conference championship.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with a pair of two-out singles. Junior Austin Darmawan and senior Max Golembo both drew four-pitch walks to start the game and junior Christian Santos loaded the bases with a walk. Junior Ted Daley got a two-out single through the left side of the infield to score Darmawan and Golembo, and Santos came around to score on a single through the right side by junior Spencer Egly.
WashU added three more runs in the top of the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles by Darmawan and Golembo. Junior Scott Nelson then made it 6-0 when he scored on a double play turned by the Violets. A two-out single by Golembo in the top of the sixth extended the lead to 7-0, and a two-run homer to left field by Santos made it 9-0 in the top of the seventh.
The Violets scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. NYU had the bases loaded with one out in the inning, but junior Matt Clohisy got a strikeout and a grounder back to him to get out of the inning with the Bears leading 9-2. WashU sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the ninth to score six runs on four hits and two walks in the inning. The Violets added a run in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 15-3.
WashU finished with 15 hits in the game, while NYU had eight. Golembo finished 3-for-4 with two walks, three RBIs and a run scored to lead the Bears offensively. WashU had nine different players record RBIs, led by Santos and Golembo with three apiece.
Junior Bill Heisler (2-0) earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs on just four hits while striking out three in six innings. Clohisy pitched two scoreless innings of relief, scattering four hits and striking out three, while junior Chris McKee allowed one run in his one inning of relief.
WashU has Monday off before returning to action with a game against Rutgers-Camden at 3:45 p.m. (ET) Tuesday in Auburndale, Fla.
Bear Notebook: WashU improved to 86-76 all-time in the UAA Championship … The Bears' only other outright UAA title came in 2005 … Darmawan had three stolen bases in the game to move into a tie for 10th with Brian Britson (1989-92) and Graham McBride (1999-02) on WashU's all-time career leaderboard with 36 … WashU finished the UAA Championship with a league-best 95 hits, 61 runs scored, 53 RBIs, .344 batting average and 1.88 team ERA … Golembo extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games, while Santos has recorded hits in six straight games.
