No. 12 Softball Bats Silent in Doubleheader Loss at Fontbonne

St. Ann, Mo., April 24, 2015 – The No. 12-ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team bats went silent in a doubleheader loss at Fontbonne University Friday night at ABC Park in St. Ann, Mo.

The Bears had six hits in a 3-2 eight-inning loss in game one, and then were limited to five hits in a 5-1 loss in game two. Fontbonne extended its winning streak to 19 games and improved its overall record to 27-9, while WashU dropped to 31-11.

Washington U. concludes regular season play Tuesday, April 28, at home against Blackburn College. Game one is set for 1:30 p.m. Prior to Tuesday's contest, Washington U. will recognize its four seniors playing there final home game – Paige Biles, Sydney Caldwell, Adrienne White and Alyssa Wilson.

Fontbonne 3, #12 WashU 2 (Eight Innings) – Game One
Game one featured two of the best pitchers in NCAA Division III in Fontbonne's Madison Leonard and WashU's Annie Pitkin. The game was scoreless through three, and Biles recorded the first hit of the game for WashU in the fourth on an infield single.

Fontbonne's Casi Glixman led of the bottom of the fourth with a triple down the right field line, and then came around to score the first run of the game on a squeeze bunt by Emily Smith. The Bears answered back with a run in the top of the sixth after Biles singled with one out and then scored on a two-out RBI single to left by sophomore Hannah Mehrle.

With the game tied 1-1 after seven innings, the game went to the international tiebreaker rule. Junior Brooke Hofer was placed on the second to start the eighth, and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Halle Steinberg. Hofer scored on a RBI single to left by Biles to make it 2-1.

Fontbonne's No. 9 hitter Caitlyn Nappier tied the game with a leadoff double to left to start the bottom of the eighth. After back-to-back walks to load the bases, Pitkin hit Smith to allow the game-winning run to score.

Leonard (22-4) tossed the complete game allowing six hits and two runs (one earned), while Pitkin (19-6) took the loss allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) in 7 1/3 innings. Biles went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Fontbonne 5, #12 WashU 1 – Game Two
The Griffins jumped in front with four runs on five hits in its first at-bat against freshman starting pitcher Mackenzie Gauden. Fontbonne added an insurance run in the fifth after Casi Glixman scored from second base on a sacrifice fly after Mehrle made a diving catch at the wall.

WashU threatened in the sixth inning after back-to-back hits from Biles and freshman Hera Tang, and then senior Adrienne White reached on an error to load the bases. An RBI groundout by Mehrle cut the lead to 5-1, and then a walk by sophomore Janet Taylor loaded the bases. Lindsay Schaefer got Caldwell to ground out to end the threat.

Clapp was outstanding out of the bullpen for WashU tossing 5 1/3 innings allowing three hits and one earned run. Gauden (6-2) allowed the first four runners of the game to reach base, and allowed four earned runs in 2/3 innings pitched.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Fontbonne won three of the four meetings this season between the two teams … Biles was 4-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI in the doubleheader, and has reached base in 35-straight games … Clapp has allowed just one earned run and four hits in the last 11 1/3 innings pitched.
