Box Score 2 Fulton, Mo., April 17, 2015 – The No. 15-ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team put together their best offensive performance of the season tallying 23 runs on 30 hits in a doubleheader sweep at Westminster College Friday afternoon in Fulton, Mo. WashU won game one 10-0 in six innings, and posted a 13-0 victory in five innings in the second game.
Washington U. hit .476 as a team in the two wins, and recorded nine extra-base hits. Senior Adrienne White went 4-for-8 with two doubles, a homerun and five RBIs in the two-game sweep, and moved into seventh place in school history with 16 career homeruns and 38 doubles. White also upped her career-hit total to 192, just eight shy of 200.
Washington U. improved to 27-9 with the two wins, while Westminster fell to 10-19. The Bears open a four-game homestand with a doubleheader against Millikin University Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m.
#15 WashU 10, Westminster (Mo.) 0 (Six Innings) – Game One
Junior pitcher Annie Pitkin (17-5) allowed three hits and struck out 11 in the complete game victory in game one. Pitkin allowed a single in the first inning and two singles in the seventh, and did not allow a runner past second base. With the 11 strikeouts, she upped her NCAA Division III-leading total to 192, and is just two strikeouts shy of 500 for her career.
White went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBIs in the win, while senior Paige Biles was 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored and two RBIs. Senior Alyssa Wilson (2-for-3, two runs scored, RBI) and sophomore Kenzie James (2-for-3, run scored, two stoles bases) also had multi-hit games for WashU, who pounded out 12 hits in the victory.
The Bears jumped in front 3-0 after a half of an inning after a sacrifice fly by sophomore Janet Taylor and a single to right center by junior Brooke Hofer. WashU added four runs in the fourth to make it 7-0. Wilson singled to left to drive in the first run of the inning, and then Biles doubled to left to drive in two. With two outs, White doubled to right center to drive in Biles.
In the sixth, Wilson and Biles led off the inning with singles and then came around to score on a three-run homerun to center by White. The homerun for White was the 10th of the season, one shy of the single-season school record set by Jamie Kressel in 2005 and 2007.
#15 WashU 13, Westminster (Mo.) 0 (Five Innings) – Game Two
The Bears jumped in front for the second-consecutive game in its first at-bat scoring three runs on five hits. Biles and James led off the game with infield singles, and then came around to score on a two-RBI single by Mehrle. Hofer singled to right to drive in Mehrle to make it 3-0.
WashU broke open the game in the top of the second scoring five runs with two outs to push the lead to 8-0. Taylor and Hofer each had RBI singles in the inning, while Wilson drove in two runs with a RBI single to right.
Leading 8-0, WashU added three runs on five hits in the third. An RBI triple by Mehrle drove in freshman Hera Tang, and then after a walk by freshman Ashley Madsen, junior Amanda Kalupa singled to right to drive in another run. Senior Sydney Caldwell added a single to right to push the lead to 11-0. White and freshman Anna McKee had an RBI double in the fourth to round out the scoring.
Freshman Mackenzie Gauden (4-1) picked up the win allowing just one hit in three innings pitched, while freshman Maggie Clapp tossed a perfect fourth and fifth inning to secure the victory.
Washington U. had seven players with multi-hit games, led by Mehrle's 2-for-3 performance with three RBIs and two runs scored. The Bears had a season-high 18 hits in game two.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: Biles extended her hitting streak to 19 games and has reached base in 29 straight … The complete game for Pitkin was her 16th of the season and 35th of her career, while the victory moved her into sole possession of fourth place (47) … WashU is 3-0 this season against Westminster and 22-1 all-time … James was 4-for-5 with three stoles bases and is hitting .579 in the month of April.
