No. 8 Women's Tennis Falls to No. 7 Carnegie Mellon 5-4

Greencastle, Ind., Feb. 28, 2015 – The No. 8-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles, but came up short in a 5-4 loss to No. 7 Carnegie Mellon University in the 2015 ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championship semifinal Saturday at DePauw University.

The Bears dropped to 3-1 with the loss, while Carnegie Mellon improved to 7-1 overall. WashU will take on No. 12 University of Chicago in the third-place match beginning at 10 a.m. (ET) Sunday, March 1. Chicago lost to No. 4 and top-seeded Johns Hopkins University 5-4 in Saturday's other semifinal.

Freshman Grace Deering and senior Hanna Newstadt gave the Bears their first point of the match at No. 2 doubles, before Carnegie Mellon won at No. 3 doubles to tie the match at 1-1. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Rebecca Ho and junior Jamie Silverberg trailed 7-4 before winning four straight games to take an 8-7 lead. The Tartans forced a tiebreaker, and pulled out an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker to take a 2-1 lead in the match after doubles.

After a win at No. 3 singles made it 3-1 in favor of CMU, Ho and Silverberg each earned three-set wins to tie the match at 3-3. Deering picked up a three-set win at No. 4 singles just as Carnegie Mellon added a win at No. 5 singles to make it 4-4. After dropping the first set, sophomore Kaylan Griffith won a second-set tiebreaker to force a third set at No. 6 singles, but Carnegie Mellon's Stacy Chang was able to win set three 6-0 to give the Tartans the win.
