St. Ann, Mo., April 25, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team were limited to 10 hits as the Bears dropped a doubleheader at No. 23-ranked Fontbonne University Friday night in St. Ann, Mo.

The Bears suffered a 7-3 loss in the opener, and then dropped their seventh one-run loss of the season in a 3-2 defeat in game two.

#23 Fontbonne 7, Washington U. 3 – Game One
Graduate student Stacy Berg was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the opener. Berg got things going with a single in the top of the third, and then moved to second after a walk by junior Paige Biles. Berg scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Janet Taylor to make it 1-0.

Sophomore pitcher Annie Pitkin did now allow a hit through the first three innings, but got into some trouble in the fourth. Fontbonne scored five runs on six hits in the inning, including a two-run home run by Jessie Pratt.

Berger doubled to lead off the fifth, and then scored on a groundout by junior Alyssa Wilson to cut the lead to 5-2. Washington U. scored another run in the sixth an a RBI single by Berg, but Fontbonne scored two in the bottom of the half of the inning after a two-run home run by Emily Smith.

Pitkin (15-10) took the loss allowing six hits and five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Sophomore Brooke Hofer threw 1 2/3 innings allowing two hits and two earned runs, while sophomore Amanda Kalupa tossed 2/3 of an innings allowing a walk. Senior Kelsey Neal was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

#23 Fontbonne 3, Washington U. 2 – Game Two
Neal (7-4) was spectacular on the mound in game two allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) in six innings. She pitched around a season-high three errors in the loss.

Fontbonne (31-5) scored a run in the first and third innings to jump in front 2-0. Taylor drove in the first run of the game in the fourth with a pinch-hit single to right that drove in freshman pinch runner Halle Steinberg. The Griffins answered right back with an unearned run off Neal to make it 3-1.

Washington U. did not go away as they put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh. Freshman Kenzie James walked with two outs, and then came around to score on a double to left by Wilson. Junior Adrienne White put together a good at-bat with Wilson on second, but Madi Leonard got White to pop up to end the game.

Washington U. (28-15) closes out regular season play with a doubleheader at Blackburn College on Saturday, April 26. Game one is set to begin at 11 a.m. in Carlinville, Ill.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: Washington U. is 23-1 this season when scoring first … Ingell moved into a tie for second place in school history in games played (173), while Neal is eighth (165).
