St. Louis, Mo., April 1, 2014 – Junior pitcher Dom Quaranta threw a complete-game shutout for the Washington University in St. Louis baseball team to lift the Bears to a 3-0 win over Spalding University Tuesday afternoon at Kelly Field.

Quaranta (1-3) limited the Golden Eagles to five hits, while recording five strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season. Junior Zack Kessinger and senior Andrew Dwoskin accounted for four of Washington U.'s seven hits and both of the team's RBIs in the win.

Washington U. had two hits through the first five innings before scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to break the scoreless tie. Kessinger led off with a single up the middle and freshman CJ Price hit a one-out single through the right side. Kessinger and Price moved to second and third on a passed ball ahead of an RBI single by Dwoskin through the left side. Price was unable to score on a lineout to left field, but crossed the plate when the Spalding catcher threw to second on a stolen base by Dwoskin to put the Bears ahead 2-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Max Golembo reached on a one-out walk and stole second. Kessinger then took a two-out, full-count pitch and singled through the right side of the infield to score Golembo and extend Washington U.'s lead to 3-0. Quaranta continued to shut down the Spalding offense, allowing just one runner past second base in the game and a called strikeout with two runners in scoring position sealed the victory for the Bears.

Washington U. (9-12) is scheduled to be back in action with a road game at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Wednesday, April 2. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. (ET) in Terre Haute, Ind.

Bear Notebook: It was Quaranta's third shutout and fourth complete game of his career … Senior Kyle Billig played in his 145th career game, which is tied for seventh with Dave Huegy (1986-89) on Washington U.'s all-time leaderboard … Golembo reached base for the 21st consecutive game … Kessinger's two hits brought his career total to 130.
