No. 17 Washington U. Softball Splits Pair of Games at UAA Championship

Altamonte Springs, Fla. March 13, 2014 – The No. 17-ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team split a pair of games on day three of the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship Thursday in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Washington U. posted a 2-1 win over the University of Rochester in game one, and then dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 9 Emory University in the second game. The Bears have a 9-3 overall record, and sit in a tie for third place in the UAA standings with a 2-3 mark. WUSTL is three games behind first-place Case Western Reserve University in the UAA standings with two games remaining.

#17 Washington U. 2, Rochester 1
Senior pitcher Kelsey Neal (2-1) allowed four hits and one earned run in the game-one victory over Rochester. Neal did not allow a runner past second base until the seventh, when Nina Korn launched a solo home run to center. She has allowed just one earned run in 17 2/3 innings pitched at the UAA Championship.

Washington U. scored all of its runs in its first at-bat of the game. After freshman Kenzie James reached base to start the game, she stole second to move into scoring position. Senior Maggie Ingell laced a ball to left field to drive in James to make it 1-0. After freshman Janet Taylor singled to left, Neal made it 2-0 with a single.

Neal was 2-for-3 at the plate for Washington U., who had five hits in the win. Tayler Fravel had four hits for Rochester, who dropped its overall record to 4-4, 1-3 in the UAA.

#9 Emory 3, #17 Washington U. 1
Washington U.'s offense remained silent for the fourth-straight game, as the Bears were limited to a season-low three hits in the loss to Emory. WUSTL did not have a hit with a runner in scoring position for the first time this season. Junior Adrienne White was 2-for-3 at the plate and extended her hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the bottom of the first.

With the score tied 0-0 with one out in the top of the sixth, Emory's Hannah Sendel launched a three-run home run off sophomore starter Annie Pitkin for the only runs of the game for the Eagles. The home run for Sendel was her sixth of the season. Pitkin (4-2) took the loss allowing six hits and three earned runs. She also struck out four and walked one in the loss.

Washington U. continues play in the 2014 UAA Championship with a pair of games on Friday, March 14, against Brandeis University at 10 a.m. (ET) and Case Western Reserve at 12:30 p.m. (ET).
