Eight-Run Deficit Too Much to Overcome for Baseball in 13-8 Loss to No. 24 Case

Sanford, Fla., March 12, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team was unable to overcome an eight-run deficit as the Bears lost to No. 24 Case Western Reserve University 13-8 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship Wednesday afternoon at Sanford Memorial Stadium.

Washington U. dropped to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the UAA with the loss, while Case improved to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play. The Bears return to action at the UAA Championship against Brandeis University at 11 a.m. (ET) Thursday. Washington U. earned an 8-3 win over Brandeis Monday afternoon.

Case jumped all over Washington U. starter junior Dom Quaranta, scoring eight runs on eight hits and three errors in the first two innings. The Bears' offense was held hitless until the top of the fifth when junior Brandon Deger and sophomore Kyle Kozak hit back-to-back one-out singles. They each moved up a base on a balk, and Deger scored on a scored on a wild pitch before Kozak scored on a groundout by senior Dylan Reid to make the score 8-2.

In the top of the sixth inning, Washington U. scored four runs all with two outs to cut the Spartans' lead to 8-6. Junior Zack Kessinger and senior Andrew Dwoskin had back-to-back two-out singles to get the rally started for the Bears. A double to left field by Deger scored Kessinger, and Kozak drew a walk to load the bases. After Dwoskin scored on a wild pitch, junior Brian Cizek drew a four-pitch walk to again load the bases. Another wild pitch scored Deger and junior Stewart Martens walked to again load the bases. Sophomore Max Golembo drew a walk to score Kozak for the Bears' fourth run of the inning, but a called strikeout ended the rally.

The Spartans answered with four two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth. In his second relief appearance of the season, freshman Nick Gollin shut down the Case offense for more than four innings, and retired nine straight batters. After being hit by a comebacker on the second out of the sixth inning, Gollin gave up three straight singles and a walk, before being replaced by freshman Max Cormier. The Spartans scored on a wild pitch and a two-RBI double before Cormier got a flyout to end the inning with Case leading 12-6.

Junior Chris Lowery and Kessinger led off the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles, before Deger hit a two-out single through the right side of the infield to load the bases. Freshman Ben Browdy drew a two-out walk on four pitches to score Lowery. Martens reached on an error that allowed Kessinger to score, but the Bears left the bases loaded in the inning trailing 12-8. The Spartans added a run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 13-8.

Case finished with 15 hits in the game, compared with nine for Washington U. Both teams left nine baserunners stranded in the game. Deger accounted for three of the Bears' hits, finishing 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Kessinger also had multiple hits, finishing 2-for-5 with two runs. Quaranta (0-3) took the loss, allowing eight runs, including six earned, in one official inning of work on the mound.

Bear Notebook: Kessinger had his fifth multiple-hit game of the season … Dwoskin and Golembo have reached base safely in all nine games this season.
