ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After receiving a by in the first round, the No. 3 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team defeated No. 32 Hope 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Doubles
The Bears took an early 1-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
First-year
Lily Brecknock and sophomore
Sam Slowik defeated Jana Beier and Madison Wei 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.
No. 9 senior
Eliana Hanna and sophomore
Ally Lin followed with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point.
No. 1 junior
Eleanor Archer and sophomore
Caitlin Bui were leading 4-2 when doubles was clinched.
Singles
Senior
Nina Moravek won the first singles point for the Bears, beating Mallory Matthews 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
No. 50 Lin claimed the next point, beating Sophia Grzesiak 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
No. 5 Hanna clinched the match at No. 1 singles, defeating No. 38 Amanda Lopykinski 6-2, 6-4.
No. 17 Archer fell 6-4 in the first set before winning the second set 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The third set had just started when the match was clinched.
No. 21 Bui won her first set 6-4 at No. 3 singles and the second set was at 5-0 when the match ended.
Senior
Amber Edmonds won the first set at No. 5 singles 6-0 and was up 5-4 in the third set.
The Bears will play the winner of No. 13 Kenyon and No. 27 Grinnell tomorrow at a 11 a.m. in the Regional Final.
