No. 14 WashU Baseball Opens CWRU Series With Pair of Wins

CLEVELAND, OHIO – The No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team picked up a pair of wins at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) on Saturday. The Bears are now 28-9 on the year with a 12-6 mark in UAA play.
 
Game 1: WashU 12, CWRU 2 (7 innings)
After halting the game on Friday in the top of the third inning due to weather, the Bears had a huge top of the third, putting up 11 runs.
 
Sophomore Ryan Soong drew a leadoff walk before junior Anthony Equale and senior Shane Pellegrino were hit by back-to-back pitches to load the bases. First-year Jacob Witte singled to short, scoring Soong for the first run of the game.
 
Sophomore Kevin Stephens followed with another single to short, scoring Equale. Sophomore Cooper Greene singled up the middle, bringing home both Pellegrino and Witte. Senior Connor Lindsey singled to right center and advanced to second on a throwing error, bringing in Stephens for a 5-0 lead.
 
Sophomore Will Taigen was hit by a pitch and Green went on to score on a sacrifice fly to left from first-year Chance Cromer. Back at the top of the lineup, Soong drew another walk to load the bases, prompting a CWRU pitching change.
 
Equale drew a walk to score Lindsey before Pellegrino drilled a grand slam over the left field fence to extend the Bears' lead to 11-0.
 
Lindsey, Taigen and Cromer drew three-straight walks to open the top of the seventh inning. Soong hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lindsey for a 12-0 lead.
 
CWRU put up its runs in the bottom of the inning. James O'Connor singled to right to lead off the inning and Westrick followed with a walk. The runners moved up on a fly out to center from Matt Trout.
 
Carson Matula, who came on to run for O'Connor, scored on a wild pitch and Eli Westrick scored on a sacrifice fly from Collin Pool. The Bears forced a ground out to end the inning and enact the 10-run mercy rule to end the game early.
 
Lindsey finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Pellegrino finished 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored while Stephens was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
 
Junior Townsend Stevenson earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings of relief with two hits, two runs and three strikeouts.
 
Game 2: WashU 13, CWRU 6
In the top of the first with two outs, Equale drew a walk and stole second. Pellegrino reached base on a fielding error, giving Equale time to score for a 1-0 lead.
 
CWRU came out in the bottom half of the inning to score three, starting with a one-out, solo home run to tie things at 1-1. Tyler Stillson drew a walk and Trout reached base on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Nate Arterburn singled through the right side, scoring Stillson, unearned. On the next play, Trout stole home, unearned, for a 3-1 edge.
 
In the top of the second inning with one out, Stephens singled up the middle and Lindsey drew a walk. With two outs, Cromer singled to center, scoring Stephens to make it a 3-2 game.
 
CWRU posted two more runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Matula led off, reaching base on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jasiah Harris. Matula moved to third on a balk and Sean Donahue drew a walk. Stillson reached on a fielding error, scoring both Matula and Donahue.
 
The Bears came out in the top of the third to pull even, 5-5. Equale led off with a single to left and Pellegrino singled through the left side. Stephens singled through the left side, scoring Equale for the first run of the inning. Lindsey drew a walk to load the bases and Taigen singled up the middle, scoring both Pellegrino and Stephens.
 
In the top of the fourth inning with one out, Equale singled to left. Pellegrino followed with a single through the right side and Witte singled to right field, scoring Pellegrino for a 6-5 Bears' lead.
 
WashU posted a four-run top of the fifth inning, starting with a single to right from Taigen. Cromer reached base on a fielder's choice and Taigen reached third on a throwing error. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, scoring Taigen for a 7-5 edge.
 
Soong singled to short to put runners on the corners and Equale walked to load the bases. Pellegrino singled through the left side scoring Cromer and Soong. Both Equale and Pellegrino stole a base and Equale went on to score on a sacrifice fly from Green to make it a 10-5 game.
 
Harris opened the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left line for the Spartans. Jaxon Knutson singled to left, scoring Harris for a 10-6 Bears' lead.
 
WashU scored its final three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Taigen drew a one-out walk and Cromer singled to center. With two outs, Equale singled to left field, scoring Taigen. Pellegrino followed with a single to center, scoring Cromer. Equale went on to score on a wild pitch, putting the Bears ahead 13-6.
 
Equale went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and one RBI while Pellegrino was 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Taigen finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
Senior Isaac Zhang earned the win on the mound, going six innings with four hits, two earned runs and eight strikeouts. Junior Parker Guthrie earned his fifth save of the season, going three innings with two hits, no runs and two strikeouts.
 
The Bears wrap up the regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader at Case Western Reserve beginning at 10 a.m. ET.
