No. 10 WashU Men's Tennis Falls, 4-1, To No. 16 Emory In UAA Quarterfinals

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team opened the 2026 UAA Men's Tennis Championship on Thursday morning with a 4-1 loss to No. 16 Emory in the tournament quarterfinals.

The Eagles were able to claim the first two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Colin Scruggs and first-year Spencer Yamamoto dropped their match to Dean Kamenev and Joshua Lai, 6-4, at number three doubles. Emory clinched the point with a 6-4 win at the top spot by No. 19 Ruilin Feng and Ajay Kartik over No. 8 senior Colin Fox and first-year Jeremy Sieben.

Junior Nathan Tam and sophomore Drew Koval were leading 5-4 over Daniel Kim and John Lasanajak when the match was halted.

In singles, No. 50 Matthew Johnstone put the Eagles ahead 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over sophomore Avi Mahajan at number four singles. Ryan Nash put Emory one match away from the win with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Tam at number six singles.

Koval got WashU on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Stefan Karatosic at number five singles before No. 44 Daniel Kim clinched the match for the team from Atlanta, 4-1, with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Fox at number three singles.

No. 2 Feng was leading No. 20 Scruggs, 6-4, 5-3, while Sieben was leading No. 41 Kamenev, 6-1, 4-6, 2-1 when the matches were halted and are considered unfinished due to the team match being decided.

WashU will next play No. 62 Rochester in the consolation semifinals on Friday, April 24. The match is scheduled to get underway at 12:30 p.m. ET.
