Stephens Walks-Off Emory, 15-5, To Earn Series Split For No. 14 WashU Baseball

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the second game in a row, the No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team earned a 15-5 walk-off win over Emory to close out the four-game UAA series, as the team split the games 2-2.

After a scoreless top of the first, WashU saw the first two batters hit into a foul out and a ground out. Sophomore Cooper Greene started the two-out rally with a single through the left side. Junior Anthony Equale then hit a double to left field that saw Greene run on contact and score on the hit. A wild pitch allowed Equale to reach third.

First-year Jacob Witte followed with a walk before a double by senior Shane Pellegrino down the left field line that allowed both Equale and Witte, who raced around the bases, to score two more as the Bears led 3-0 after one inning.

The Eagles would use a leadoff double in the top of the second inning to eventually come around and score, trimming the lead down to 3-1.

Emory would then tie the game in the top of the fourth after a leadoff hit batter and a two-run home run to center field, putting both teams at 3-3.

WashU answered immediately with another three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Pellegrino led off with a double down the left field line and, after a strikeout, he advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Connor Lindsey was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. A sacrifice bunt by sophomore Miles Birke saw two runners in scoring position with two outs.

First-year Chance Cromer then followed with a double down the right field line and into the corner that saw both Pellegrino and Lindsey score for WashU. Sophomore Ryan Soong then reached first on a throwing error by the pitcher that saw Cromer score from second, with the Bears leading 6-3 after four innings.

WashU would add two more runs to its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Birke led off with a single before Soong would earn a one-out walk. A sacrifice bunt by Greene put Birke at third and Soong at second. Equale then hit his second double of the game to plate both runners and put the Bears ahead 8-3.

Emory would begin to cut into the lead in the top of the seventh. A leadoff double would come around and score on back-to-back groundouts before the Eagles got a solo home run over the fence down the left field line. WashU saw its lead go back down to three, 8-5.

The Bears got both runs back and added four more in the bottom of the seventh. Pellegrino led off with a walk and stolen base. A single to second by Stephens allowed Pellegrino to reach third. A groundout allowed Stephens to take second. A walk to Birke loaded the bases.

After a pitching change, Cromer hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Pellegrino from third. Soong backed that up with a double to left field that scored both Birke and Stephens, putting WashU up 11-5. Greene followed up with a single through the left side that allowed Soong to score, after he had reached third on a wild pitch, as the Bears took a 12-5 lead.

On Equale's third double of the contest, Greene was able to reach third. Witte then collected the fifth WashU hit of the inning on a single down the left field line, scoring both Greene and Equale, with the Bears taking a 14-5 lead.

After Pellegrino was hit by a pitch and a wild pitch, Stephens hit a deep walk-off single up the middle that allowed Witte to come in and score, giving the Bears a 15-5 win in seven innings.

Both Equale and Pellegrino finished with three hits to lead eight different Bears with hits. WashU hit seven doubles in the contest along with 14 RBIs.

Sophomore Levi Gingerich (2-1) picked up the win in 5.0 innings of work with three strikeouts. Senior Alex Ardemagni (1) picked up the save. He earned the save after coming in with a three-run (6-3) lead and pitching at least 1.0 innings, finishing the game, no matter the final winning score by the Bears.

WashU is on the road for the final two weekends of the regular season, beginning next weekend when it travels to Brandeis for a four-game UAA series on Friday, Apr. 17 – Sunday, Apr. 19. The first game of the series on Friday is scheduled for a 3 p.m. ET first pitch.
