ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team closed out their weekend of action, falling in both ends of a doubleheader to Transylvania on Saturday at Kelly Field. The Pioneers took game one 10-6 before finishing with a 6-4 win over the Bears.
Transylvania 10, WashU 6
WashU got on the board early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. First-year
Chance Cromer walked and advanced to second when sophomore
Ryan Soong was hit by a pitch. Both then advanced when the Pioneer pitcher balked. They both came around and scored on a single down the right field line by junior captain
Anthony Equale, putting WashU up 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, WashU doubled their lead with a pair of runs. Sophomore
Miles Birke led off with a single and advanced on senior
Shane Pellegrino's single to left field. Two batters later, sophomore
Kevin Stephens doubled down the left field line, scoring both Greene (who reached on a fielder's choice) and Pellegrino.
Transy cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth after scoring the first two batters of the inning, who reached on a hit by pitch and single through the left side, respectively.
The Bears got one of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth after Greene hit a one-out single to right-center, then stole both second and third. He would score when Stephens flied out for a sacrifice fly to right field, putting WashU ahead 5-2.
The Pioneers would take the lead with a five-run seventh inning. Transy would use six hits, all singles from the first six batters, to score their runs while the Bears committed one error as the visitors took a 7-5 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, WashU would get one of the runs back after Equale scored after being hit by a pitch and advancing on a groundout and single by first-year
Drew Dillon. The Bears trailed just 7-6 after seven.
Transy would add their final three runs in the top of the eighth. Using another five hits, four singles and a double, the Pioneers used their timely base knocks to plate their three runs while holding WashU scoreless in the final two innings to preserve their 10-6 win in game one.
Transylvania 6, WashU 4
It looked like WashU had begun to turn around their luck on the day, scoring runs in both the second and third innings.
In the second, Dillon led off with a five-pitch walk and stole second and third. Then with two outs, Greene singled through the left side, scoring Dillon for the 1-0 lead. Then in the bottom of the third, Equale was hit by another pitch with two outs. He advanced to second on a single by first-year
Jacob Witte and a walk by Dillon. On sophomore
Will Taigen's single up the middle, all runners advanced, scoring Equale from third, putting the Bears ahead 2-0.
However, Transy answered in the top of the fourth with three runs. With one out, Ethan Dillon singled and stole second before Baxter Tedesco walked. Both runners then stole their next base and scored on a single through the right side by Trevor Watkins, tying the game at 2-2. The Pioneers took the lead when Watkins scored on a single by Max Finn, as Transy led 3-2.
They added one more run in the top of the fifth after a leadoff triple by Kaden Ford, who scored on a bases-loaded single to right field. Two more runs came across for the Pioneers in the top of the sixth as they used three straight singles to start the inning and scored on the third hit and then a groundout to Pellegrino at shortstop.
The Bears added single runs in both the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Greene and in the seventh on a run scored by Witte after reaching on a single. WashU was unable to cut any further into the lead as Transy left with the game two win, 6-4.
WashU is back on the field on Wednesday, Mar. 18, when they face a different set of Pioneers in Wis.-Platteville. The two teams will play a single game at Kelly Field with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
