ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 20 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team wrapped up the weekend series with (RV) Coe College on Sunday, coming away with a 10-4 win, sweeping the three games with the Kohawks. With the win, the Bears improve to 6-0 on the season, while the Kohawks fall to 2-3.
The Bears got on the board early. First-year
Chance Cromer led off the bottom of the first and was hit by a pitch. Cromer reached second on a walk by sophomore
Kevin Stephens and advanced to third on a fielder's choice on first-year
Jacob Witte's batted ball. With runners on the corners, the Kohawks threw down to second to get Witte out trying to steal. Cromer crossed the plate on the throw to second, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.
With the bases empty and two outs, junior
Anthony Equale and sophomore
Will Taigen both walked before senior
Shane Pellegrino doubled down the left field line, scoring both Taigen and Equale for a 3-0 lead.
After Coe got one run back in the top of the second, both teams went scoreless until the Bears added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Witte led off with a single, and Equale doubled down the left field line. A groundout by Taigen and a sacrifice fly by Pellegrino each scored a run.
First-year
Eli Sitzer doubled down the left field line, and sophomore
Cooper Greene continued the left-side hitting for WashU, trading places with Sitzer and giving the Bears a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, with two outs, Stephens singled, and Witte hit a triple down the right field line, scoring Stephens. A throwing error by the Kohawks' third baseman kept the inning going and allowed Witte to score, giving WashU an 8-1 lead.
The bottom of the eighth saw the final two runs score for the Bears. After senior Connor Lindsay led off with a walk, he eventually scored two batters later. Equale hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Cromer, who had reached earlier on a fielding error, putting WashU ahead 10-2.
Coe attempted a comeback, scoring twice in the top of the ninth, but could not pull through, ending the game on a strikeout looking, 10-4.
Both teams finished with 11 hits, with Stephens, Witte, and Sitzer each recording two hits.
Graduate
Chase Brickley picked up his second win of the season with 7.0 innings of work.
WashU returns to Kelly Field on Saturday, March 11, with a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan beginning at 11 a.m. The Bears and Titans will play a third game on Sunday, March 12, at 12 p.m. to wrap up the series.
