No. 16 WashU Women's Basketball Sweeps Season Series With No. 17 Chicago With 64-52 Win

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team decided to honor its senior Jordan Rich in the best way possible on Saturday afternoon – with a win over No. 17 Chicago to sweep the season series, 64-52.

With the win, the Bears finish the regular season with a 19-6 record and 10-4 in the UAA, while the Maroons fall to 17-7 overall and 9-5 in the UAA.

Junior Lexy Harris led a trio of WashU players in double-figure scoring with her 15 points. Junior Sidney Rogers was right behind her with 14 points, while Rich added 11 points in her final regular season home game.

Harris nearly had a double-double with eight rebounds, while Rich almost had one of her own, dishing out seven assists.

WashU got things started by scoring the first six points of the contest while holding the Maroons without a point for nearly the first two minutes of the game. After Chicago tied the score at 8-8 with 6:14 left in the first quarter, the Bears answered with a basket from junior Amelia Rosin at 5:43.

The Maroons responded with a quick 5-0 run by 4:09. The teams then traded baskets and the lead for the rest of the period, with Rich hitting a jumper with 19 seconds left on the clock for the 17-15 lead after the first quarter.

Once again, WashU scored the first six points of the quarter, this time giving themselves a 23-15 lead with 7:30 remaining in the half. Chicago finally scored with a three-pointer just under seven minutes on the clock to cut the lead down to five, 23-18. Another Maroon basket at 5:18 saw the lead down to just three before a 6-0 run, capped by a layup from Rogers at 2:38, gave the Bears their biggest lead, 29-20.

However, it wasn't the largest for long. With the Maroons scoring to cut the lead to 32-25 with 27 seconds left in the second quarter, sophomore Ava Blagojevich hit a three-pointer with just four seconds left, giving WashU the 35-25 lead at the break.

The third quarter was much more even, with the Bears leading by as many as 12 on three separate occasions in the first three minutes. A layup and a free throw at 4:38 by Rosin put WashU back ahead by 11 before a 5-0 run from 3:42-1:57 by the Maroons trimmed the lead down to just five.

Rogers hit a layup with 49 seconds left in the third period, putting the Bears back ahead by eight.

After a three by Rich to open the fourth quarter at 9:45, Chicago went on another 6-0 run over the next 1:21 to trail by just five with 8:24 remaining in the game. The teams then went back to trading points, with the Maroons scoring their final points on a pair of free throws with 2:17 remaining, reducing the lead down to just seven points.

The WashU defense then grabbed four defensive rebounds while the offense put the lead back up to the biggest of the game at 12 on free throws by Rosin at :52, giving the Bears the 64-52 win at home.

The Bears led the Maroons in both points off turnovers (18-14) and points in the paint (40-38).

WashU will now await its fate for the NCAA Tournament, which will begin next weekend. The selection show will be on NCAA.com at 1:30 p.m. CT.
