No. 17/18 WashU Football Earns First Top-10 Win In Program History; Beats No. 6/8 John Carroll 35-25

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the first time in program history, in front of an enthusiastic fan base, the No. 17/18 Washington University in St. Louis football team beat a Top 10 opponent, upsetting No. 6/8 John Carroll 35-25.
The Bears improve to 5-0 with a 4-0 mark in NCAC play.
 
WashU received to start the game and went on to punt after reaching the 44. On John Carroll's first drive of the game, the Blue Streaks put together an eight-play drive that resulted in a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Green to Nico McBride. Colin Schuler's kick was good for a 7-0 lead.
 
After the Bears punted on their next drive, junior Ethan Venable sacked John Carroll's Green for a loss of three yards, forcing the Blue Streaks to punt away.
 
On WashU's next possession, the Bears had a six-play drive, culminating in a one-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Levi Moore to senior Matthew Kinoshita. Junior Matias Adrogue's kick was good for a 7-7 tie.
 
The Bears began their next drive as the first quarter ended, continuing it at the start of the second quarter and eventually scoring on a four-play drive. Moore connected with senior Luke Stephens down the middle for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Adrogue's kick was good, putting WashU ahead 14-7.
 
On the Blue Streaks next drive, after reaching the 23, Green's pass was intercepted by first-year Trey Knox in the end zone for a touchback.
 
WashU needed just three plays to score again, ultimately ending with a 76-yard touchdown pass from Moore to senior Makael Carter. Adrogue's kick was good, extending the Bears' lead to 21-7 with 10:25 left in the second quarter.
 
John Carroll put together a seven-play drive, resulting in a touchdown on a six-yard pass from Green to Shane Lindstrom. Schuler's kick was good for a 21-17 game.
 
The Bears punted on their next drive and John Carroll ended up kicking a 30-yard field goal as the clock hit zero, sending WashU into halftime with a 21-17 edge.
 
After both teams punted the ball away on their first drives of the third quarter and a second from the Blue Streaks, WashU went on a seven-play scoring drive, culminating in a short pitch from Moore to Donahue, who then hit Moore in the end zone for a touchdown, the old "Philly Special". Adrogue's kick was good, putting WashU ahead 28-17 with 6:44 remaining the third quarter.
 
With less than one minute left in the third quarter, sophomore Teddy Koehl forced a fumble on John Carroll's Josh Styles and it was recovered by senior Spencer Snipe, putting the ball back in the Bears' hands at their own 32.
 
After a quick four-yard run from sophomore Brayden Lewis to open the drive, he ran for a 64-yard touchdown. Adrogue hit the extra-point kick, putting the Bears ahead 35-17.
 
The Blue Streaks opened the fourth quarter with the ball and after bringing it down to the 28, the ball was intercepted by senior Joy Chane at the 19.
 
With just under 10 minutes left, the Blue Streaks scored their final touchdown with three plays, ending in a six-yard run from Dorian Facen, Jr. JCU was successful with a two-point conversion, making it a 35-25 game, which held until the end.
 
As a team, the Bears had 412 yards of total offense (263 passing 149 rushing). John Carroll had 420 yards of total offense (338 passing, 82 rushing).
 
Moore was 15-for-26 with 257 passing yards and three touchdowns.
 
Lewis led the rushing game with 83 yards on seven attempts with a touchdown. Carter led the receivers with 135 yards on three receptions with one touchdown.
 
Defensively, senior Henry Murry had 11 total tackles (8 solo, 3 assists) with 0.5 sacks and a pass breakup. Chane had eight total tackles (4 solo, 4 assists) with 1.0 tackles-for-loss, one interception and one pass breakup. Snipe had six total tackles (3 solo, 3 assists) with 1.0 tackles-for-loss, 1.0 sacks and one fumble recovery.
 
After a bye week next weekend, the Bears return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Kenyon for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
