ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 11 Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team had a quick turnaround from a game on Saturday by taking on the Panthers of Greenville on Tuesday evening at Francis Olympic Field. A pair of goals in each half led the Bears to a 4-0 victory at home.
With the win, WashU improves to 8-1 on the season.
It did not take long for the Bears to get on the scoreboard in the eighth minute. After the Panthers nearly committed an own goal, senior
Zach Susee passed through the defenders on the right side, finding junior
Ethan Wirtschafter in front of the left side of the goal, who tapped it in for a 1-0 lead at 7:40.
Controlling possession for most of the half in the offensive end of the pitch, the Bears doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. After the Panthers saved a shot by first-year
Miles Newman, WashU tallied one of its three corner kicks of the half. First-year
Sebastian Valdes lobbed the ball to the front of the goal where junior
Quentin Gomez right-footed a goal at 32:13.
The Bears took their 2-0 lead into the break.
For nearly the first 25 minutes of the second half, the teams played more evenly but without any goals. That was until first-year
Wole Adeoye right-footed a pass from the left side that went by two defenders before it found the left foot of classmate
Daniel Kochen, who tapped in WashU's third goal of the contest at 69:37.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Bears added a fourth and final goal when Valdes took a corner kick and put it to the head of junior
James Whitehurst in front of the goal, who knocked it down to the foot of junior
Carter Sasser to tap it in for the goal at 79:38, resulting in a 4-0 final.
As a team, WashU's defense was on full display, not allowing the Panthers to take a shot the entire contest, while the offense saw the Bears fire 20 total shots, including 10 on goal. In total, WashU finished with six corner kicks while Greenville had zero.
Wirtschafter led the Bears with four shots, while sophomore
Yash Kshirsagar was right behind him with three.
WashU will stay at home on Saturday, Oct. 4 when it opens UAA play with a visit from Brandeis. Kickoff with the Judges is scheduled for 11 a.m.
