WashU Men's Tennis Opens Fall Schedule In Split Locations

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team split up to open the fall portion of its schedule this weekend. The Bears sent seven players to the River Forest Clay Invite hosted by Northern Illinois, while six scholar-champions stayed back for the WashU Invite at the Tao Tennis Courts on Saturday.

WashU Invite 

Players from both Saint Louis University and Missouri Baptist also participated at the WashU Invite in both singles and doubles. 

For the Bears, the doubles team of seniors Case Fagan and Colin Fox went 2-0 with an 8-7 win over Missouri Baptist and an 8-6 win over SLU. Junior Nathan Tam teamed up with sophomore Drew Koval to also finish the day undefeated in doubles with an 8-5 win and an 8-1 win over teams from Missouri Baptist. 

Junior Daniel Radke and sophomore Avi Mahajan finished 1-0 in counting matches with an 8-7 win over a duo from MBU. 

In singles, Fox picked up an 8-1 win over SLU, Mahajan won 8-5 over MBU, and Fagan took down a player from MBU 8-7.

River Forest Clay Invite 

First-years Jeremy Sieben and Hans Deng were playing for 1st place at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively, after winning their first two collegiate matches each. Sieben dropped a tight second set tiebreak to finish runner-up with Deng forcing a third set/match tiebreak, falling 10-7. 

Sophomore Coleman Merce (No. 4 singles) won his first match against Illinois State in a match tiebreak 10-6 before falling in the third-place match 6-2, 6-4 to another player from ISU 

On Friday, Wu and Sieben teamed up for a 6-3 win in the No. 1 doubles bracket. They followed that up with a 6-4 win over Western Michigan to finish 2-0 in doubles.

Seniors Eric Kuo and Colin Scruggs dropped their first doubles match at No. 2 before rebounding for a tennis "bagel" against Marquette, 6-0.

WashU is back in action the weekend of Sept. 26-29 when they travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. for the ITA Fall Regional.
