ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis softball team celebrated Senior Day in a big way, winning its first UAA title since 2017. The Bears earn the UAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out on Monday at 10 a.m. CT whom they will face and where. Follow the selection show on NCAA.com.
The Bears head into the final game of the Emory series at 31-5 with a 16-1 mark in conference play.
Game 1: WashU 4, Emory 2
Senior
Taylor Geluck put the Bears on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After senior
Natalia Pilpil drew a two-out walk, Geluck drilled a shot to left center for a double, scoring Pilpil for the 1-0 lead.
With strong defense and stellar pitching on both sides, there was not another run until the fifth inning when the Bears made it a 2-0 game. With two outs, junior
Alexa Hanish singled down the left field line. Senior
Maggie Baumstark followed with a triple – which barely missed going out of the park, bouncing off the top of the fence – scoring Hanish.
Emory tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Abby Wylie singled to short. Ashley Chu bunted to third and advanced to third base on a throwing error, scoring Wylie for the first run. Ella Janish drew a walk and Rylie Ballog, who was on to run for Janish, stole second. Ella Hoyle hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Chu to even the score.
In the bottom of the sixth, first-year
Harper Nix singled through the right side to lead things off, and senior
Brooke Capparelli, who came on to run, reached second on an error. With two outs, sophomore
Kristina Donaldson ripped a single up the middle, advancing to second on the throw and scoring Capparelli to give the Bears back the lead, 3-2. Following an Emory pitching change, sophomore
Kennedy Grippo singled to short, scoring Geluck to take a two-run, 4-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh with one out and one runner on, Megan Sutton lined into a double play as senior pitcher
Jordan Rossi caught a line drive and threw to first to get out Grace Cooper and end the game.
Baumstark was 1-for-2 with one RBI, while Geluck finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Grippo and Donaldson each went 1-for-3 with one RBI, and Nix was 1-for-1 on the day.
Rossi earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with no earned runs, five hits, and three strikeouts. She is 7-1 on the year.
Game 2: WashU 10, Emory 0 (5 innings)
WashU had a big inning in the bottom of the second, scoring eight runs. Geluck drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a ground out from Nix. Graduate student
Dawson Dabboussi singled to left field, putting runners on the corners, and
Kristina Donaldson drew a walk. With a new pitcher, junior
Sydney Schneider reached on a fielder's choice, and Geluck scored on a throwing error for the 1-0 lead.
Baumstark drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Dabboussi, and Reardon was hit by a pitch, scoring Donaldson. Capparelli doubled to right, scoring Schneider and Baumstark. Pilpil grounded out to third, scoring Reardon, and Geluck drilled a single to center, scoring Capparelli for a 7-0 game.
Nix was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Dabboussi drew a walk, and Geluck scored as the final pitch of the at-bat was wild.
WashU added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, sophomore
Elena Locascio doubled down the left field line and moved up to third on a fielder's choice from first-year
Christina Smith. Locascio went on to score on a throwing error by the catcher as Smith stole second, and Smith scored on a single through the left side from Donaldson.
Geluck finished 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored. Capparelli was 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Dabboussi and Donaldson each went 1-for-1 with one RBI and one run scored.
Senior
Jamie Burgasser earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with two hits and six strikeouts. She improves to 13-1 on the season.
The Bears conclude the regular-season tomorrow with a single game against Emory at 3 p.m.
