No. 18 Softball Sweeps NYU in Road Series

BRONX, N.Y. – The No. 18 Washington University in St. Louis softball team completed the UAA series sweep of NYU on Sunday. The Bears are now 21-5 on the year with an 8-1 mark in conference play.

Game 1: WashU 4, NYU 3 The Bears fell behind 0-2 in the bottom of the second, in a game that originally began on Saturday. With one out, Naya Schubel singled to short and stole second. She moved up on an Emma Aridi single to center, and both runners scored on an Olivia de Hesselle single to center.

After two and a half innings, the game was halted due to rain and postponed to Sunday.

In the top of the fourth inning, WashU took a 3-2 lead over the Violets. With one out, senior Taylor Geluck singled to center, and sophomore Kennedy Grippo singled to left. Sophomore Julia Nicholus drove in the first run of the game for WashU with a double to right, scoring Geluck. Both Grippo and Nicholus went on to score on a single to center from sophomore Jamie Cendana.

In the top of the fifth, senior Maggie Baumstark led off with a single to short. Senior Erin Reardon singled to third, and senior Brooke Capparelli reached base on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Baumstark made it a 4-2 game, stealing home.

The Violets put up their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alyssa Quary drew a lead-off walk, but the Bears came up with a double play on the next at-bat. Schubel drilled a homer to left, making it a one-run, 4-3 game.

Nicholus finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Cendana went 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Baumstark was 1-for-2 with one run scored and a walk. Both Geluck and Grippo finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Sophomore Maria Brooks earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with three runs, one walk, and eight strikeouts.

Game 2: WashU 8, NYU 1 The Bears scored two runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, senior Natalia Pilpil singled to left, and Geluck singled to center. First-year Harper Nix reached base on an error, scoring both Pilpil and Geluck for the 2-0 lead.

The Violets scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Quary singled to right, and Schubel singled to center. With two outs, Karleigh Kluever singled to third, scoring Quary to make it a 2-1 game.

WashU posted a six-run inning in the top of the fifth. With one out, Pilpil drew a walk, and Geluck reached on a fielder's choice. Nix singled to short, and Nicholus singled to center, scoring Geluck. In the next at-bat, Cendana drilled a triple, scoring Nix and Nicholus for a 5-1 lead.

Junior Sydney Schneider singled and advanced to second on an error, scoring Cendana. Graduate student Dawson Dabboussi drew a walk, and Grippo doubled to center, scoring Schneider and Dabboussi to make it an 8-1 game.

Nicholus went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Pilpil finished 2-for-2 with one run scored and a walk. Schneider finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Grippo was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Senior Jamie Burgasser earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with one run and two strikeouts.

The Bears are back at home on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Illinois College at 2 and 4 p.m.
