No. 14 Softball Picks Up a Pair of Wins Over Illinois College

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept Illinois College on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears are 23-5 on the season.

Game 1: WashU 3, Illinois College 1
The Bears put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Kennedy Grippo reached base on an error and advanced to second to lead the inning off. Senior Maggie Baumstark singled to third to put runners on the corners. Baumstark was caught stealing in a rundown, giving Grippo time to score the first run of the game. With two outs, senior Taylor Geluck drilled a homer to left-center, her third of the season.

The Bears added another run in the bottom of the second inning. Graduate student Dawson Dabboussi drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jamie Cendana. With two outs, Sydney Schneider dropped a double into shallow left field, scoring first-year Christina Smith, who came on to run for Dabboussi.

In the top of the third inning, Ezzy Mauermann led off with a home run to left-center, making it a 3-1 game.

Geluck finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Nicholus finished 1-for-2 with a walk.

Sophomore Hattie Bond earned the win in the circle, her third of the season, pitching a complete game with seven hits, one run, and two strikeouts.

Game 2: WashU 5, Illinois College 1
The Bears posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Schneider led off with a triple to left-center and went on to score on a wild pitch. Pilpil singled to right field, and Geluck doubled to left-center. Both runners scored on a double to left-center from first-year Harper Nix.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, with two outs, Grippo singled to right-center and then stole second. She scored on a Pilpil single to right, making it a 4-0 game.

Illinois College got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Mauermann drew a walk and stole second. Raegan Rezba drilled a triple to left, scoring Mauermann.

In the bottom of the fifth, with two outs, first-year Emma Dow singled to second and scored on a triple from sophomore Kristina Donaldson for the 5-1 advantage.

Schneider finished 3-for-4 with one run while Pilpil went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Nix went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a walk.

Senior Jamie Burgasser picked up her 10th win of the year in the circle, pitching a complete game with four hits, one run, and eight strikeouts.

The Bears are off from competition this weekend and return on Friday, April 18, for a three-game UAA series with Brandeis. Friday's game, which will be the Cardinals RBI game as well as Faculty/Staff Appreciation, begins at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Bears begin a doubleheader against the Judges at 12 p.m.
