ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – After moving into the consolation semifinals, the No. 32 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team rebounded for a 4-0 win over No. 33 Brandeis to advance to the fifth-place match on Sunday morning.
The duo of senior Scott Yamamoto and first-year Drew Koval got things started with a 6-2 win at number two doubles. WashU clinched the doubles point when senior Colin Scruggs and junior Eric Kuo won their match at number three doubles 6-3. Seniors Stefan Hester and Pato Garcia Muriel were tied at 5-5 before the match was stopped.
Things got off on the right foot quickly for the Bears in singles as sophomore Nathan Tam and first-year Avi Mahajan won at number five and six singles, respectively, by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores, putting WashU up 3-0.
The Bears clinched the match when Hester, after dropping his first set in a tiebreak, came back and won his final two sets, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2. The remaining three matches at one, two and four singles all went unfinished as the match was played to decision (first to four points).
WashU looks to take down No. 24 Carnegie Mellon on Sunday, April 27 when the two teams play for a fifth-place finish at the UAA Tournament. First serve with the Tartans is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET.
