PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The No. 11 Washington University in St. Louis softball team completed the sweep of Carnegie Mellon, taking two on Saturday to win the series 3-0. The Bears are now 29-5 on the year with a 14-1 mark in UAA play.
Game 1: WashU 6, Carnegie Mellon 3
The Bears put up two runs in the top of the first inning. Senior
Erin Reardon was hit by a pitch to lead things off and then stole second. Senior
Brooke Capparelli singled to left and then stole second. Senior
Natalia Pilpil hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Reardon. Senior
Taylor Geluck doubled up the middle, plating Capparelli for a 2-0 lead.
The Tartans scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning. Abbey Reese drew a lead-off walk and stole second. Maddy Beall singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. Koko Sagae hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Reese for a 2-1 game.
Carnegie Mellon pulled even in the bottom of the third inning. Kiera Boucher drew a lead-off walk and stole second. Emma Martin put down a sacrifice bunt, and Boucher went on to score on a throwing error.
The Bears scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Reardon doubled to right and stole third. Capparelli reached on a fielder's choice and Reardon scored for the first run of the inning. Pilpil singled to third and Geluck singled up the middle to load the bases. First-year
Harper Nix grounded out to second, scoring Capparelli. Sophomore
Kristina Donaldson singled up the middle, scoring
Emma Dow, who was on to run for Pilpil, and Geluck to put WashU ahead 6-2.
The Tartans scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth. Reagan Diamond drew a lead-off walk, and Faith Lawrence singled to left center. Beall reached on a fielder's choice, and Jasmine Chao singled down the right field line, scoring Lawrence.
Reardon finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Geluck went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Donaldson finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Senior
Jamie Burgasser picked up her team-leading 12th win of the year in the circle, pitching a complete game with six hits, two earned runs, and five strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 8, Carnegie Mellon 2
The Tartans got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. Reese hit a lead-off single to second and stole second before advancing to third on a Beall fly out. Allie Rome laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Reese for a 1-0 CMU lead.
The Bears came out to score four runs in the top of the third inning. Capparelli led off with a triple to right, and Pilpil drew a walk and stole second. Geluck drew another walk, and junior
Sydney Schneider reached base on a fielder's choice, allowing Capparelli time to score, tying the game 1-1. In the next at-bat, Donaldson drilled a homer to left center, clearing the bases and making it a 4-1 game.
WashU had another four-run inning in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore
Kennedy Grippo drew a lead-off walk, and graduate student
Dawson Dabboussi was hit by a pitch. Grippo stole third and then home for the first run of the inning.
Sophomore
Elena Locascio singled and advanced to second on the throw, and Pilpil singled through the left side to score Locascio. Geluck hit a two-run homer to left, scoring Pilpil and giving WashU an 8-1 lead.
CMU scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Beall led off with a single to short and Rome walked. Sagae singled to right field to load the bases. Following a force out at home, Boucher singled up the middle, scoring Rome.
Capparelli went 2-for-3 with one run, while Locascio went 2-for-2 with one run. Donaldson finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while junior
Alexa Hanish finished 1-for-1 with two walks. Geluck was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Senior
Jordan Rossi earned the win in the circle, pitching four innings of relief with five hits, one run scored, and three strikeouts.
The Bears have one final series of the regular season against Emory on Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10. WashU and the Eagles will play a doubleheader on Friday, May 9, at 1/3 p.m., honoring the seniors prior to the first pitch. They will conclude the series on Saturday, May 10, at 3 p.m.
