RV Baseball Knocks Off No. 16 Webster In Finale Home Regular Season Contest, 9-2

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Playing in its final regular season home game, RV Washington University in St. Louis baseball team used a big fourth inning to propel itself to a 9-2 win over No. 16 Webster on Tuesday afternoon at Kelly Field.

It was not until the third inning that a number was added to the scoreboard, thankfully in favor of the Bears. Senior Brandon Buday led off with a double to left center. Graduate Colter Couillard-Rodak followed by reaching first on a throwing error by the shortstop and made it around to third on the play. Buday advanced to third when the shortstop started his throw and was able to race around the base and make it home on the error, putting the Bears ahead 1-0.

Graduate Noah Reichman picked up a walk to put runners on the corners. Junior Shane Pellegrino would hit into a sacrifice fly to shallow right but it allowed Couillard-Rodak to come in and score WashU's second run of the game, 2-0.

The Gorloks would cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth with a single run on two hits. Webster led off with a single and then a stolen base. They would score their run on the next batter who hit a double down the right field line into the corner of the field. A Bears' pitching change was followed by two strikeouts before two walks loaded the bases. WashU then induced a groundout at second base to end the scoring threat.

The Bears immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning with five runs to break the game wide open. Sophomore Anthony Equale opened the inning with a double. First-year Kevin Stephens followed by bunting a ball down the first base line right to the first baseman. When he tried to apply the tag, the ball came out of his glove which allowed Stephens to reach first safely. During Buday's next at bat, the Gorloks' pitcher attempted to throw out Stephens at first base, but an errant throw on the failed pickoff allowed Stephens to reach third and scored Equale from second, putting the Bears back up by two, 3-1.

Buday would hit a single up the middle, scoring Stephens. Couillard-Rodak reached base again safely after hitting a double to left that Buday raced around and scored on. The Gorloks changed pitchers and would load the bases just two batters later after Reichman was hit by a pitch and Pellegrino walked. It forced another pitching change.

With one out, graduates Josh Erpenbeck and Will Yarbro had back-to-back walks to each walk in a run and put WashU ahead 7-1.

Webster would get one of the runs back in the top of the sixth after an error allowed a runner to reach third before a sacrifice fly cut the lead down to five, 7-2.

Reichman provided the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth. After Couillard-Rodak singled to right center, Reichman slammed a home run at least 15 feet above the fence in left field for a two-run home run, putting the Bears up for good 9-2.

Buday led the Bears, going three-for-five with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Couillard-Rodak and Reichman each had two hits. Couillard-Rodak was two-for-five with three runs scored and an RBI while Reichman was two-for-three with two runs and two RBIs.

Junior Miles Quemuel-Labrador earned his sixth win in relief this season after pitching the final three innings in a strong performance with three strikeouts, no walks and just two hits.

WashU will hit the road at Emory for the final weekend of the regular season, beginning on Friday, April 25. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
