ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In its final regular season match, the No. 32 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team defeated Div. II McKendree, 5-2, on Monday afternoon at the Tao Tennis Courts.
WashU got a quick win to start doubles from seniors
Stefan Hester and
Pato Garcia Muriel, 6-2, at the top doubles spot. Senior
Scott Yamamoto and first-year
Drew Koval then teamed up for a 6-3 win at number two doubles to clinch the doubles point, putting the Bears ahead 1-0.
Despite the point already being decided, juniors
Eric Kuo and
Colin Scruggs were able to eke out a 7-6 win at number three doubles to complete the sweep.
Singles were a bit tougher for the Bears. They were able to go up 3-0 with wins from Yamamoto at number three (6-1, 6-3) and Scruggs at number one (6-1, 7-5). However, the Bearcats pulled within one with a straight-set win at number five and a come-from-behind, three-set win at number two.
Sophomore
Nathan Tam clinched the win with his own come-from-behind win at number six, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. With daylight dimming and the time after 7 p.m., Koval won his first three-set match of the season with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 win at number four to secure the 5-2 final score in favor of the Bears.
WashU will now travel to Altamonte Springs, Fla. on Friday, April 25 for the start of the 2025 UAA Championship. The number six-seeded Bears will face off against number three-seeded and No. 6 nationally-ranked Emory in the quarterfinals. First serve with the Eagles is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET.
