Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

No. 32 Men's Tennis Wins Twice on Senior Day

SAPPINGTON, Mo. – It might have been raining outside, but it was hot indoors as the No. 32 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team picked up a pair of 5-0 wins on senior day over Grinnell and Greenville at the Vetta Sunset Indoor Bubble in Sappington.

Prior to the start of the matches, seniors Stefan Hester, Pato Garcia Muriel, Scott Yamamoto, and John Fakouri were honored with a special recognition.

Match 1: WashU 5, Grinnell 0
The Bears got things started by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Hester and Garcia Muriel earned a 6-4 win at the top spot, while juniors Eric Kuo and Colin Scruggs shut out their opponents at number three, 6-0.

Kuo was a double winner with a straight-sets win, 6-1, 6-1, at number two singles to put the Bears ahead 2-0. Right behind him, Yamamoto picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at number five.

Despite playing to decision and since the matches were both close to finishing, the final two matches were allowed to finish. Junior Case Fagan picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at number four while Fakouri won his match at number six, 6-0, 6-4.

Match 2: WashU 5, Greenville 0
After a quick break, WashU got back on the court and took on the Panthers of Greenville to wrap up the day.

Fagan and junior Colin Fox got things started off with a 6-0 win at the top doubles spot. Sophomore Nathan Tam and first-year Drew Koval clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at number two. First-years Avi Mahajan and Coleman Merce completed the sweep with a 6-3 win at number three.

Kuo got his third win of the day with a 6-2, 6-0 win at number two to start singles play.

Garcia Muriel and Tam had nearly identical scores at numbers five and six singles, respectively, with a 6-0, 6-2 and a 6-2, 6-0 win. The two matches clinched the match for the Bears.

Almost right behind, like the match against Grinnell, Hester won 6-1, 6-3 at number three to complete the matches that finished. The remaining two went unfinished as the match had been decided.

WashU will be back on the court on Monday, April 21, when they welcome McKendree to the Tao Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
