STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – It was a rough finish for the RV Washington University in St. Louis baseball team's UAA contests with New York University on Sunday as the Violets salvaged a series split, winning the doubleheader to close out the weekend.
Game 1: NYU 3, WashU 0
It was just the first time this season that the Bears have been shutout as the Violets scored twice in the first inning, taking a quick 2-0 lead.
The Violets added a run in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead before keeping the Bears off the board the rest of the way. The Bears were able to get runners on third twice during the game, but were unable to push them across home plate.
Junior
Shane Pellegrino and sophomore
Anthony Equale each collected one of WashU's two hits.
Sophomore
Isaac Zhang (2-1) took the loss while striking out two.
Game 2: NYU 5, WashU 2
NYU got on the board first once again in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring one run in the bottom of the second.
The Bears answered in the top of the third to tie the game up. With one out, senior
Brandon Buday singled and then stole second base. A groundout by Pellegrino allowed Buday to reach third. A single by graduate
Noah Reichman scored Buday, tying the game at 1-1. The Violets replied in the top of the third with the remaining runs they needed. The home team used two singles, a double, and took advantage of two WashU errors to take a 5-1 lead.
It wasn't until the seventh inning that the Bears were able to put runners in a position to score. WashU led off with back-to-back walks by graduate
Will Yarbro and Equale. First-year
Kevin Stephens came in to pinch-run for Yarbro and reached third on a fielder's choice off of Buday's bat, putting runners on the corners with one out. After a line out to left, Reichman walked to load the bases. A single by senior
Braden Mazone to left field pushed all the runners one base, scoring Stephens, cutting the lead down to 5-2. NYU induced a groundout to the next batter, securing the 5-2 win.
Reichman went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Mazone also finished with two hits and an RBI. Senior
Sebastian Guzman (3-3) took the loss, working the first 4.0 innings. He finished with one walk and one strikeout.
WashU returns home for their final home games of the regular season, beginning on Wednesday, April 16 with a single game against Eureka. The Bears welcome the Red Devils to Kelly Field for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
