ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- It was a tough task for the No. 24 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team on Saturday to take on the No. 4 team in the country for the second match in three days. In the end, the Maroons were able to escape the Tao Tennis Center with a 4-3 win over the Bears.
Chicago got things started, making quick work in doubles, winning all three matches against WashU. The closest match was with juniors
Eric Kuo and
Colin Fox, who dropped a 6-4 set at number three doubles.
In singles, WashU fared much better. Junior
Colin Scruggs dropped his first set at number one before rebounding for the 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win to get the Bears on the board.
Kuo won his first set easily, 6-0, but would drop his second set in a reversal of the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6. Nearly flipping back to the score of the first set, Kuo won his match 6-0, 6-7, 6-1 at number two singles.
Down at number six singles, senior
John Fakouri won his first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 6-1.
Much like Kuo's match, Fakouri flipped the second set and picked up the 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 win.
Chicago was able to get wins at three through five to split the singles matches and, combined with the doubles point, narrowly defeat the Bears.
WashU will be back on the court tomorrow when it takes on Div. I Creighton at the Tao Tennis Center. First serve with the Blue Jays is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
