Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Follmer Gets Win No. 400 As No. 24 Men's Tennis Shuts Out Hendrix, 4-0

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Despite having to travel 45 minutes to complete the match, rain certainly did not stop the No. 24 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis from helping head coach Roger Follmer to his 400th career win.

Follmer took over the reins at WashU to start the 2001-02 season and has won double-digit matches each season except one, the COVID-shortened Spring 2020. He has led the team to the NCAA Tournament all 22 seasons at the helm and has three UAA titles along the way.

The 2007-08 season saw Follmer lead the Bears to a 21-4 overall record and the team's first national championship.

Thursday's match got started with a few games finishing before rain permanently moved the match to the indoor facility at Principia College where the Bears finished sweeping through doubles to take a 1-0 lead before picking up the first three wins in singles for the 4-0 victory.

Due to time, the match was only being played to decision instead of the normal completion. The remaining matches that were still on court were halted and considered unfinished with the score at the time the match was decided.

The team of juniors Eric Kuo and Colin Fox wrapped up their match at number three doubles first with a quick 6-1 win. Finishing nearly at identical times, the pairs of senior Scott Yamamoto and sophomore Daniel Radke and seniors Stefan Hester and Pato Garcia Muriel completed the sweep in doubles. Yamamoto and Radke finished second with a 6-2 win at number two while Hester and Garcia Muriel finished less than a minute later with a 6-3 win at the top spot.

While doubles were going on, to save some time, sophomore Nathan Tam got his singles match started at number six and made quick work of his opponent 6-1, 6-3 to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

For the other singles matches, one through three got started right after doubles. Once Tam finished his match, Yamamoto took his court to start his match at number four singles. Hester also made quick work of his opponent at number three singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win to clear the court for junior John Fakouri's match at number five singles.

With WashU leading 3-0, junior No. 33 Colin Scruggs came from behind after dropping his first set 6-3 and took the second set 6-0. Since the match had been decided, the two played out the third set with Scruggs closing out the match with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 win at number one singles.

WashU will be back on the court on Saturday, April 12 when the Bears host defending national champion and No. 4 Chicago. The match with the Maroons gets underway at 10 a.m.
