ST. LOUIS, Mo. – It was another come-from-behind win for the RV Washington University in St. Louis baseball team on Sunday; it just was not another walk-off. The Bears completed the weekend series sweep of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Sunday with a 6-2 victory at Kelly Field at Irv Utz Stadium.
Prior to the contest, WashU honored its seven seniors with a special recognition ceremony for their years of dedication to the baseball program. The seven seniors include
Brandon Buday,
Justin Zachery,
Hank Weiss,
Ryan Kirkendall,
Will Henkel,
Sebastian Guzman, and
Braden Mazone.
The Pointers got on the board first for the second straight time, with a single run in the top of the second. However, the UWSP lead did not last long as the Bears answered in their half of the inning.
Graduate
Noah Reichman led off the bottom of the second with a walk before classmate
Josh Erpenbeck singled to right field, advancing Reichman to second. The second walk of the inning, this time to sophomore
Carson Cleage, loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore
Anthony Equale followed Cleage to the plate and was hit by a pitch, scoring Reichman from third, tying the score at 1-1.
Sophomore
Miles Birke kept the bases loaded as the next batter as he got the second hit of the contest for WashU, a single to the shortstop that scored Erpenbeck, putting the Bears ahead, 2-1.
WashU added an insurance run in the bottom of the third. With one out, Reichman hit almost a bloop ball that just clipped the top of the fence down the right field line and bounced back into fair territory. The umpire down the line signaled for a home run, but after Reichman stopped at second, the umpires got together and confirmed it was a home run, with Reichman finishing his trot home, scoring the third run of the contest for the Bears.
The scoreboard for the seventh and eighth innings looked identical for both the Pointers and Bears as UWSP scored a single run in the top of the seventh before the Bears answered with a pair in their half of the frame. With two outs, Reichman was intentionally walked, and Erpenbeck followed him with a double down the left field line that put runners on second and third. First-year
Will Taigen then hit his first triple of the season, scoring both Erpenbeck and Reichman, and gave WashU a 5-2 lead after seven innings.
First-year
Kevin Stephens hit a single to get things going for the Bears in the eighth and eventually came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Zachary, giving WashU the 6-2 lead heading into the ninth.
Weiss came in to pitch for the Bears and immediately induced a groundout to shortstop. After an error allowed a Pointer to reach first, Weiss got his first strikeout of the game. UWSP then loaded the bases with two outs before Weiss struck out the final batter swinging, securing the 6-2 win for WashU.
Both Erpenbeck and Stephens went 2-for-4 at the plate, with Erpenbeck scoring a pair of runs. Reichman finished the day going 1-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored, a pair of walks, and an RBI.
Guzman came into the game in relief in the top of the fifth and pitched the next 2.2 innings, securing his second win of the season. He finished with three strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one run.
The game was the eighth this season in which the Bears outhit their opponent, including all three times against UWSP.
WashU has a quick turnaround as it hosts Coe College on Monday, March 10 at Kelly Field. The first pitch with the Kohawks is scheduled for 12 p.m.
