ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept UW-Stout in exciting fashion on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 6-3 win in the first game of the doubleheader and following with a seventh-inning walk-off double to earn the 8-7 win in the second game of the day.
The Bears are now 7-2 as they head into their spring break trip to California.
Game 1: WashU 6, UW-Stout 3
The Bears put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Junior
Sydney Schneider led off with a single to left center and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from junior
Alexa Hanish. Senior
Maggie Baumstark doubled to left center, scoring Schneider for the first run of the game. Baumstark moved up on a ground from junior
Jamie Cendana and went on to score on an
Erin Reardon bunt single for a 2-0 WashU lead.
WashU put up another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hanish drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on grounders from Baumstark and Cendana. Senior
Erin Reardon drove in Hanish with a single up the middle, putting the Bears ahead 3-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, UW-Stout put up two runs, starting with a lead-off walk by Rayni Bresnahan. Nicole Stone doubled to left center and Stephanie Kuhn followed with the same to score the first two runs for the Blue Devils.
WashU responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Cendana led off with a single through the right side and Reardon bunted to third. Cendana advanced to third on a throwing error on Reardon's hit. Graduate senior
Dawson Dabboussi singled to right center, scoring Reardon and Cendana. Dabboussi moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Elena Locascio and scored on a grounder from senior
Natalia Pilpil.
UW-Stout scored one final run in the top of the seventh inning. Donna D'Addabbo was hit by a pitch and Bresnahan singled to left field to advance Sammy Noreen, who came in to run for D'Addabbo. Emma Holden singled through the left side to load the bases and Noreen went on to score on a Kuhn sacrifice fly.
Reardon went 3-for-3 with two RBI and senior
Taylor Geluck finished 2-for-4. Dabboussi was 1-for-2 with two RBI on the day.
Sophomore
Hattie Bond earned the win in the circle, pitching five innings with seven hits, two earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Senior
Jordan Rossi came on to pitch two innings and earn the save with four hits, one earned run and two strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 8, UW-Stout 7
WashU had a big first inning, scoring six runs on five hits. Reardon drew a lead-off walk and then stole second. Pilpil doubled down the right field line, bringing Reardon home for the first run of the game. Geluck singled down the left field line and first-year
Harper Nix drew a walk. After a force out at home, Cendana singled through the right side, scoring both Geluck and Nix.
Sophomore
Kristina Donaldson drilled a double to left center, scoring Dabboussi, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Cendana. Following a pitching change, Baumstark drew a walk and Reardon singled to center, scoring Donaldson for a 6-0 lead.
The Bears added another run in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Nix doubled to center and Dabboussi reached base on a throwing error. Cendana singled to right field, scoring Nix for a 7-0 lead.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in the top of the third inning. Emma Muehlenbeck drew a lead-off walk and D'Addabbo doubled down the left line to bring in Muehlenbeck for the first run of the game. With one out, Kuhn singled to third and Holden singled to the pitcher to load the bases. Abbey Dusterhoft drew a walk, scoring D'Addabbo to make it a 7-2 game.
UW-Stout had a huge fourth inning, tying the game 7-7. Payton Dolecki led off with a single through the right side and Muehlenbeck bunted to third. D'Addabbo singled up the middle to load the bases and Bresnahan singled through the left side to score the first run of the inning.
Kuhn singled to left center, scoring Muehlenbeck and prompting a WashU pitching change. Dusterhoft drew a walk, scoring D'Addabbo and Liz Rohl singled to left, bringing in Bresnahan. With two outs, Dolecki singled through the left side, scoring Kuhn to tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Nix hit a one-out single to left field. With two outs, Cendana drilled a walk-off double to left center, scoring Nix for the 8-7 win.
Cendana finished 3-for-4 with four RBI. Nix went 2-for-3 with three runs score and Reardon finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored. Donaldson finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
Senior
Jamie Burgasser came on in relief to pitch four innings with two hits, four walks, no earned runs and three strikeouts. She is now 3-0 on the season.
The Bears now make the trip out west for their spring break trip to California. They will face Occidental on Tuesday, March 11 at 12/2 p.m. PT, followed by No. 10 Redlands on Thursday, March 13 at 12/3 p.m. PT. On Saturday, March 15, WashU will take on the University of La Verne at 3/5 p.m. PT and close out the trip against Whittier on Sunday, March 16 at 10 a.m./12 p.m. PT.
