LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team opened its spring break trip with a sweep of Occidental College on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears are now 9-2 overall.
Game 1: WashU 12, Occidental 4
Occidental got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Alysha Wagner led off with a double to left field and advanced to third on an Anna Kim grounder. Sophia Siu was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, and Evelyn Lorch scored Wagner with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Bears responded with a three-run second inning. Senior
Taylor Geluck drew a lead-off walk and junior
Sydney Schneider singled to left field. Sophomore
Kennedy Grippo singled to center and advanced to second on the throw, scoring Geluck. Senior
Maggie Baumstark drove in two runs with a single to center, scoring Schneider and Grippo for the 3-1 lead.
The Tigers went on to tie things up in the bottom of the third inning. Wagner drew a lead-off walk. Kim singled to right field and advanced to third on an error, scoring Wagner also on the error. Siu drove in Kim with a sacrifice fly for the unearned tying run to make it a 3-3 game.
WashU came out in the top of the fifth inning to score three more runs. Senior
Brooke Capparelli drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior
Natalia Pilpil reached base on a fielder's choice and Geluck doubled to center to put two runners in scoring position.
Schneider singled to center and advanced to second on an error, scoring both Pilpil and Geluck. Grippo grounded out to second, moving Schneider up to third, and Schneider went on to score on a single to center from junior
Alexa Hanish for the 6-3 lead.
The Bears put up three more in the top of the sixth inning. Baumstark led off with a single to left and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Senior
Erin Reardon blasted a triple to right center, scoring Baumstark for the first run of the inning.
Pilpil hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Reardon, and Geluck followed with a double to right center. Schneider singled to right, scoring Geluck to put the Bears ahead 9-3.
Occidental scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as Isabella Harding hit a homer to center field.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bears scored their final three runs of the day. Hanish led off with a double to center and advanced to third on a grounder from first-year
Harper Nix. Baumstark drew a walk and Reardon bunted to third. Capparelli hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hanish. Both Baumstark and Reardon also scored on a throwing error by first base for the 12-4 lead.
Schneider went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Baumstark finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Hanish was 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored, while Geluck finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Reardon finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Senior
Jordan Rossi earned the win in the circle with a complete game, going seven innings with eight hits, two earned runs, and six strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 15, Occidental 1 (5 innings)
The Bears got on the board early as sophomore
Elena Locascio hit a one-out homer to left center in the first inning to put WashU up 1-0.
In the top of the second inning, the Bears went up 6-0. Sophomore
Kristina Donaldson led off with a single up the middle and Hanish bunted to the catcher. Sophomore
Jamie Cendana drew a walk to load the bases, and a double from Baumstark brought home Donaldson and Hanish for a 3-0 lead.
In the next at-bat, Schneider grounded out to third, scoring Cendana and Baumstark on an error. Locascio drew a walk and graduate senior
Dawson Dabboussi reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Geluck singled to left center to score Dabboussi and give WashU the six-run advantage.
Occidental scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Harding drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brooke Doebler doubled to left, scoring Harding.
The Bears put up two more in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Cendana singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error. Baumstark reached base on a fielding error and then stole second. Schneider singled to left center, scoring Cendana and Baumstark, both unearned.
In the top of the fourth inning, WashU scored the remainder of its runs. Geluck drew a one-out walk and Pilpil drilled a homer to left field for the first two runs of the inning. Donaldson singled to center before stealing second, and Nix drew a walk. Cendana singled to the pitcher to load the bases, and all three runners scored on a double to left center from sophomore
Julia Nicholus.
Schneider bunted to the catcher and Locascio scored Nicholus with a sacrifice fly to right. Schneider scored the final run on a Dabboussi double to left field.
Cendana was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Donaldson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Dabboussi finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, and Schneider was 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Pilpil finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored.
Senior
Jamie Burgasser finished with the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with three hits, one run, and four strikeouts.
