Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

No. 8 Bowdoin Wins Four of Six Singles Matches to Escape With Win Over No. 12 Men's Tennis

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – It looked like moving the match up a day to escape inclement weather in the area was going to benefit the No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team on Wednesday after winning the doubles point. However, No. 8 Bowdoin came back in singles and won four of the six matches to escape with the narrow 4-3 victory over the Bears.

Seniors Stefan Hester and Pato Garcia Muriel got things started at the top double spot with a 6-4 win. First-year Drew Koval and senior Scott Yamamoto clinched the doubles point for WashU with a 6-3 win at number three doubles.

Four of the six singles matches went three sets. Junior Colin Scruggs won his first set at number two singles, 6-3, before dropping the second set 5-7. Regaining control, Scruggs won the third set, 6-1, for the win.

Hester dropped his first set at number three singles, 6-4, but bounced back with a pair of identical 6-3 sets to earn his win.

Both Koval and senior John Fakouri won their first sets at number four and six singles, but their opponents were able to come back and claim the matches in three sets. With their wins at number one and five singles as well, the Polar Bears came from behind for the 4-3 win over the Bears.

WashU has one more match in California on Friday, March 14, when they take on No. 8 Swarthmore, who is currently tied in the rankings with Bowdoin. First serve with the Garnet is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT in Claremont, Calif.
