REDLANDS, Calif. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team split with No. 9 Redlands on Friday afternoon. The Bears are now 10-3 overall.
Game 1: Redlands 4, WashU 2
Redlands scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Paige Messenlehner singled to short and stole second. Brooklyn Bard singled through the left side and moved to second, putting two runners in scoring position. Leila Jackson was hit by a pitch, scoring Messenlehner for a 1-0 lead.
The Bears tied things up in the top of the third inning. Senior
Erin Reardon led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on a grounder from senior
Natalia Pilpil. Senior
Taylor Geluck singled to the pitcher, scoring Reardon for a 1-1 game.
Redlands scored its final three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Adyson Kim drew a one-out walk and Maya Holshoe did the same. With two outs, Bard reached on a fielding error, scoring Kim. Katlyn Gandara singled up the middle to score Holshoe and Bard.
WashU scored its second run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, junior
Sydney Schneider singled up the middle. Sophomore
Kennedy Grippo singled down the third base line and sophomore
Julia Nicholus singled to second, scoring Schneider.
Reardon finished 2-for-4 with one run scored, and Grippo went 2-for-3. Nicholus was 1-for-1 with one RBI, and Geluck went 1-for-3 with one RBI. Schneider finished 1-for-3 with one run scored.
Sophomore
Maria Brooks took the loss in the circle, pitching a complete game with three hits, one earned run, and three strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 7, Redlands 4
Redlands took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Messenlehner singled through the left side and stole second. She went on to score as Bard tripled to left center. Bard scored on an Isabella Culp sacrifice fly to right field.
The Bulldogs added another run to the board in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Jenay Scott singled to center and stole second. Messenlehner doubled to right field, scoring Scott to make it 3-0.
The Bears tied things up in the top of the third inning. Junior
Alexa Hanish hit a lead-off single to right and advanced to second on a fielding error. She advanced to third on a fly out from senior
Maggie Baumstark. Reardon drew a walk, and Hanish stole home for the first Bears' run of the game. Senior
Brooke Capparelli singled to center, advanced to second, and then advanced to home on a throwing error by the catcher, with Reardon scoring in the process.
WashU took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Schneider was hit by a pitch to lead off, and Grippo tripled down the right field line, scoring Schneider. Grippo went on to score on a
Jamie Cendana bunt single to first base.
Redlands put up its final run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Natalie Lowthers hit a one-out double to right center and moved to third on a Leila Gomez grounder. Kassidy Long drew a walk, and Messenlehner singled through the left side, scoring Lowthers.
WashU added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Pilpil hit a one-out single to center, and Geluck followed with a single up the middle. Schneider grounded out to short, advancing both runners. Grippo singled up the middle, scoring
Emma Dow, who came on to run for Pilpil, and Geluck.
Geluck finished 2-for-4 with one run, and Grippo was 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Hanish finished 2-for-2 with a run.
Senior
Jamie Burgasser picked up her fifth win of the season, pitching a complete game with eight hits, four runs, and one strikeout.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader at the University of La Verne, starting at 2 p.m. PT. WashU wraps up its spring break trip on Sunday with a doubleheader at Whittier College.
