No. 13 Men's Basketball Falls to Chicago in Regular-Season Finale

CHICAGO, Ill. – The No. 13 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team closed out the regular-season with a 76-68 loss to the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The Bears conclude the regular-season with a 19-6 record and 9-5 in UAA play.
 
Senior Hayden Doyle led the Bears with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists. First-year Connor May scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and had two assists. Senior Drake Kindsvater netted 10 points with seven rebounds and junior Will Grudzinski had 10 points and four rebounds.
 
The score was tied twice in the first two-and-a-half minutes with Doyle and Grudzinski each scoring a bucket. Chicago scored the next five points to make it a 9-4 game at 16:16. Kindsvater put in a bucket and sophomore George Gale laid one in to make it a one-point, 9-8 game.
 
The Bears took a lead following a layup from sophomore Jake Davis and a pull up jumper from Kindsvater, going ahead 13-11 with 14:03 on the clock. Chicago responded with a 3-pointer to take a 14-13 lead.
 
The teams continued to exchange the lead and the game was tied at 19 apiece following a 3-pointer from May. The score was tied again at 21 after a layup from sophomore Emmett Lawton with 9:42 remaining.
 
Chicago maintained a small lead until a pair of free throws from junior Calvin Kapral put the Bears ahead 27-26 at 6:32.
 
As the clock ticked down, the game was tied at 27, 29, 33 and 35. In the final 1:30 of the first half, the Maroons hit three free throws and a layup to head into the locker room with a 40-35 lead over the Bears.
 
Chicago hit the first basket of the second game for a 43-35 lead. The Bears followed with five-straight points on a layup from Doyle and a 3-pointer from Grudzinski to close the gap to two points, 42-40, at the 18:34 mark.
 
The Maroons then had five-straight to take a seven-point, 47-40 lead with 15:55 on the clock. Chicago continued to hold a multi-point and following a 3-pointer from Noah Pit, went up by nine, 57-48, with 13:15 left.
 
The Bears scored the next five points on a jumper from Doyle a layup from Davis and a free throw from Kindsvater to make it a four-point, 57-53, game at 11:54. Following a pair of free throws from Chicago's Luke Smith, Grudzinski drilled a 3-pointer for a three-point, 59-56 game midway through the second half.
 
The Bears brought the deficit to just two points at 9:23 after a 3-pointer from Doyle to make it 61-59. Following a layup from Grudzinski and a free throw from Davis, the Bears trailed by just one point with 7:11 on the clock.
 
Chicago netted five-straight points for a 68-62 lead before May hit a 3-pointer to cut it back down to a three-point deficit with 4:09 remaining. Over the next three-and-a-half minutes, the Maroons scored five-straight to go up 73-65 with just 47 seconds remaining.
 
The Bears brought it down to six with 19 seconds on the clock, but Chicago closed it out with a pair of free throws to come away with the win.
 
WashU shot 27-for-62 (43.5%) and 7-for-23 (30.4%) from 3-point range. Chicago edged the Bears on the boards 31-30.
 
The Bears now await their NCAA Tournament fate. The selection show takes place on Monday, March 3 at 11 a.m. CT on ncaa.com.
