No. 10 Men's Basketball Falls to No. 3 NYU on the Road

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team fell to No. 3 NYU on Sunday afternoon, 77-58. With the loss, the Bears are now 15-5 overall with a 5-4 mark in UAA play.
 
Senior Hayden Doyle led the Bears with a 20-point, four rebound, two assist effort. First-year Connor May also reached double-figures with 14 points.
 
In the opening minutes of the game, the score was tied twice at 2-2 and 7-7 with the Bears holding a brief 5-4 lead following a steal and 3-pointer from Doyle at 18:25 and again at 9-7 following a Doyle layup.
 
NYU went on a 9-0 run to take a 16-9 lead with 14:27 on the clock. Sophomore Emmett Lawton hit a jumper and the Violets followed with another 9-0 run for a 25-11 lead at 9:34.
 
Down 17 with 3:44 on the clock, May hit a 3-pointer. Following two NYU free throws, Doyle and May both netted shots from distance to send the Bears into halftime trailing 35-25.
 
The Violets opened the second half on a 6-0 run for the 25-41 advantage at 17:07.
 
Down 17 points, sophomore Jake Davis hit a layup and May drilled a 3-pointer to make it 44-32 with 14:59.
 
Midway through the half, May and Lawton each put in a layup to close NYU's lead to 12 points, 50-38. The Violets responded with back-to-back 3-pointers for a 56-38 lead at 9:26.
 
Down 18 points, Doyle stole the ball and scored on a fastbreak. Junior Will Grudzinski followed with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 13 points. Following an NYU layup, Grudzinski scored again on a pass from Doyle, making it a 63-50 game with 5:39 remaining. The 13-point gap is the closest the Bears would get for the remainder of the game.
 
As a team, the Bears went 21-for-48 (43.8%) and 7-for-22 (31.8%) from 3-point range. The Violets edge WashU 33-25 on the boards.
 
The Bears will look to bounce back next weekend with a game at Case Western Reserve University at 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. ET game at Carnegie Mellon on Sunday.
