ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The RV Washington University in St. Louis softball team closed out the weekend with a 4-0 record, defeating St. Catherine and RV Coe at home on Sunday afternoon.
Game 1: WashU 9, St. Catherine 3
The Bears put two runs on the board in the first inning. With two outs, senior
Natalia Pilpil drew a walk and graduate student
Dawson Dabboussi doubled down the left line to put two runners in scoring position. First-year
Harper Nix singled up the middle, scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead.
WashU added another run in the second inning, starting with a lead-off walk from junior
Sydney Schneider, who then moved up on a ground out from senior
Maggie Baumstark and went on to steal third. Senior
Erin Reardon drew a walk and both runners stole a base, scoring Schneider.
In the top of the third inning, Dabboussi drew a one-out walk and first-year
Christina Smith, who came on to run for Dabboussi, stole second. She went on to score on a Nix single through the left side for a 4-0 Bears' lead.
WashU scored another in the top of the fourth inning. Senior
Brooke Capparelli drew a two-out walk and moved to third on a Pilpil single up the middle. Capparelli went on to score on a throwing error for a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning Nix led off with a double to left center. First-year
Emma Dow, who came on to run for Nix, went on to score on a single from sophomore
Julia Nicholus.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, St. Catherine scored three runs, starting with a single from Helen McKinnon. Mayci Larson singled to right and Faith Bonse singled through the left side to load the bases.
Kylee Kohout singled to right center, scoring McKinnon and Larsen. Marin Ceyonwa singled up the middle to load the bases again and Bonse scored on an error for a 7-3 game.
WashU put its final two runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Nix led off with a single down the right field line and sophomore
Jamie Cendana was hit by a pitch. Nicholus laid down a sac bunt to put two runners in scoring position and a double from Baumstark scored both runners for the 9-3 win.
As a team, the Bears recorded 12 hits.
Nix went 4-for-4 with three RBI while Cendana finished 2-for-3 with one run scored. Pilpil was 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Sophomore
Hattie Bond picked up the win in the circle, pitching 5.1 innings with six hits, two earned runs and three strikeouts.
Game 2: WashU 12, Coe 0 (5 Innings)
The Bears struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs. Grippo drew a lead-off walk and scored on a throwing error which also allowed sophomore
Elena Locascio to each base. Locascio then scored on a Pilpil single to right field.
Pilpil moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right field from senior
Taylor Geluck. Baumstark sent a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Geluck for the 4-0 lead.
WashU added another four runs in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Dabboussi singled to right field and Baumstark singled down the right field line. Smith, who came on to run for Dabboussi, stole home for the first run of the inning.
Schneider singled to third base and then stole second. Baumstark scored on a wild pitch and Schneider scored on a triple from junior
Alexa Hanish. Reardon drew a walk and Hanish stole home for an 8-0 Bears' lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Grippo led off with a single to third and Locascio singled up the middle. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and Pilpil drew a walk to load the bases. First-year
Kennedy Rushing grounded out, driving in Grippo and Smith followed with a walk.
Baumstark singled down the right field line, scoring Locascio and Pilpil. Baumstark and Smith each advanced a base on a wild pitch and Schneider drew a walk to load the bases. Hanish drew a walk to score Smith for a 12-0 lead.
Baumstark went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Hanish finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and Pilpil finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Sophomore
Maria Brooks earned her first win of the year in the circle, pitching a complete game with no runs and six strikeouts.
The Bears are home again next weekend, starting with a 3 p.m. game against Central on Friday, followed by a 1 p.m. game against Central and a 3 p.m. game against Calvin on Saturday.
