ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Despite a late-game rally, the RV Washington University in St. Louis softball team fell to No. 11 Central 4-3 in eight innings on Friday afternoon. The Bears are now 4-1 on the season.
The Dutch put up two runs in the top of the first inning, starting with a walk from Haley Bach. She moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Larissa Miller and then stole third. Hannah Higgins reached base on a fielder's choice to short and Bach scored the first run of the game. Higgins moved up to third on an Addi Starr ground out and scored on a Rylee Dunkin single to the pitcher for the 2-0 lead.
Central added another run in the top of the fourth. Dunkin led off with a single up the middle and Emma Jensen singled to left field. Mariah Parton singled to second, loading the bases and Dunkin scored on an Alexa Anderson single to right.
WashU made it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs. Sophomore
Elena Locascio led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a grounder from senior
Natalia Pilpil. Sophomore
Jamie Cendana drilled a double to left center, scoring Locascio for the first Bears' run. With two outs, graduate student
Dawson Dabboussi singled to short to put runners on the corners and Cendana stole home to make it a 3-2 game.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bears came out to tie the game. Senior
Erin Reardon led off with a bunt single to third and moved up on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Kennedy Grippo. Locascio drew a walk and Pilpil drilled a long single to left center, pushing Reardon across for the game-tying run for a 3-3 game.
Central scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. With Ali Henry placed on second per extra innings rules, Dunkin put down a sacrifice. Jensen drew a walk and stole second base and Henry went on to score on a Parton single to center for a 4-3 game.
Pilpil finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and Reardon went 2-for-2 with one run scored. Cendana was 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored and Locascio went 1-for-1 with one run scored.
Senior
Jordan Rossi took the loss in the circle, pitching a complete game with eight hits, three earned runs and two strikeouts.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game against Central followed by a 3 p.m. game against No. 20 Calvin.
