ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 18 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team defeated the University of Rochester 78-48 on Friday evening in front of a packed Field House. The 48 points marks the fewest the Bears have allowed this season. WashU is now 18-5 overall with an 8-4 mark in UAA play.
Four Bears reached double figures, led by senior
Drake Kindsvater with 15 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. First-year
Connor May had 14 points and four rebounds. Senior
Hayden Doyle netted 10 points with nine rebounds and four assists and junior
Calvin Kapral scored 10 points and grabbed three boards.
Kapral netted the first bucket of the game, laying one in off a Kindsvater pass less than one minute in.
After Rochester tied things at two apiece, Kindsvater and junior
Will Grudzinski put in back-to-back layups for a 6-2 lead with 16:07 on the clock.
The Yellowjackets tied things up again at 6-6 but Grudzinski followed with a 3-pointer on a Doyle assist for a 9-6 edge. Rochester put in a jumper and sophomore
George Gale netted a layup, putting the Bears ahead 11-8.
WashU started to create space, going on a 17-0 run over a six-minute span. Up two points, first-year
Connor May hit a 3-pointer on an assist from sophomore
Emmett Lawton, followed by a 3-pointer from Kindsvater on an assist from sophomore
Ryan Cohen.
May netted a pair of free throws for a double-digit lead and sophomore
Jake Davis put in a layup. Following a Kapral steal, Doyle hit a layup and Kapral followed with a layup on a Doyle assist. Doyle closed out the run with a 3-pointer on an assist from Gale for a 29-10 lead with 6:33 remaining in the first half.
After a Yellowjackets' layup, Kindsvater hit back-to-back jumpers and May followed with a layup. Kindsvater added another bucket and Davis laid one in.
Rochester hit another jumper and Kindsvater closed out the half with a pair of free throws to put the Bears up 41-15 at the half.
The Yellowjackets edged the Bears in scoring, 15-11, in the first seven minutes of the second half, but the Bears maintained a 20+ point lead as the minutes went on.
Up 21 with 11:11 on the clock, Kindsvater netted a pair of free throws and Doyle drilled a 3-pointer on an assist from Gale. Following two free throws from Rochester, Cohen netted a shot from distance and May hit a pair of foul shots.
Lawton drilled a shot from behind the arc followed by a layup to give the Bears a 69-37 lead with 5:08 remaining.
Sophomore
Lucas Vogel grabbed an offensive rebound and Gale put in a layup before Vogel hit a 3-pointer and a turnaround jumper for a 76-42 Bears' lead. Following a Rochester bucket, first-year
Yusuf Cisse put in a driving layup for the final WashU basket of the game.
The Bears shot 29-for-69 (42.0%) and 9-for-22 (40.9%) from 3-point range. WashU edged Rochester on the boards, 50-40.
WashU is home for one final regular-season game on Sunday when No. 7 Emory comes to the Field House for a 2 p.m. game. Prior to tip-off, the Bears will honor their seniors,
