ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against No. 7 Chicago on Saturday evening. The Bears wrap up the regular season with a 16-0-2 overall record and a 6-0-1 UAA mark.
Just 4:27 in, the Bears were whistled for a handball in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for Chicago. Mary Stuart Kerrigan stepped to the line and converted the PK for a 1-0 Maroons' lead.
In the 26
th minute, the Maroons were called for a penalty in the box, giving the Bears a PK. Senior
Grace Ehlert's kick was saved by Chicago goalkeeper Sophia Sasaki, keeping the Maroons ahead by a goal.
The Bears tied things up in the 76th minute on a perfectly-placed corner kick from junior
Keira Smyser that curled into the top right corner of the net. It marks Smyser's first goal of the season and first in a Bears' uniform since transferring into the Danforth Campus.
WashU had 13 total shots with five on goal while Chicago had four shots with two on goal. The Bears edged the Maroons 6-2 in corner kicks.
Smyser had two shots, both on goal, while Viscovich had four shots with one on goal. Sophomore
Olivia Clemons recorded three shots with one on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kassidy Lanthier made one save on the day.
The Bears' postseason hunt for a repeat national title begins next weekend with the NCAA Regional. WashU, which earned the UAA's automatic bid last weekend after securing the conference title, will find out its NCAA postseason fate on Monday at 10 a.m. when the selection show airs on ncaa.com.
