WHITEWATER, Wis. – The RV Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team opened its 2025-26 season on the road on Saturday when it paid a visit to RV Wis.-Whitewater. A late second-half comeback fell just short as the host Warhawks were able to get the 63-58 win over the Bears.
First Team Preseason All-American junior
Lexy Harris led all scorers with 26 points and earned her first double-double as she also grabbed 12 rebounds. Classmate
Sidney Rogers also reached double figures with 11 points.
Both teams attempted to grab the lead early in the first quarter as the lead changed hands three times in the first five minutes. UWW would take an 11-6 lead going into the first media timeout. A pair of free throws by junior
Catherine Goodwin at 4:29 and another at 3:21 cut the lead down to just two, 11-9.
However, the Warhawks would extend their lead back up to seven with a three-pointer at 1:15 left in the quarter. A last-second layup by Harris saw UWW take a 19-14 lead into the second quarter.
The teams would once again trade points to begin a period as the Warhawks saw their lead slowly build up to 12 points with 4:59 remaining in the half. However, the Bears' defense held strong while a jumper and layup from Harris and a three-pointer from Rogers saw the Bears not allow UWW to score while cutting the lead down to just five at the break.
UWW opened the scoring in the second half with eight straight to its biggest lead, 37-24, with 7:42 left in the quarter. Less than two minutes later, the Bears cut the lead down to seven on a pair of free throws by Harris, 37-30. After the Warhawks built it back up to 12, WashU answered right back with a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from senior
Jordan Rich with 1:48 left in the quarter.
A pair of UWW free throws with 7:34 left in the contest put the lead back up to eight in favor of the home team. Another 6-0 run by the Bears cut the deficit to just two with 5:23 on the clock. Once again, it became a game of trading nearly basket for basket, with a free throw by Harris with 32 seconds left on the clock keeping the game within two. UWW would make good on all four last-minute free throws to secure the 63-58 win.
Next weekend, the Bears host the 24th Annual McWilliams Classic, featuring Benedictine, Rose-Hulman, and Elmhurst. WashU hosts Benedictine on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. and will play either Rose-Hulman or Elmhurst the following day.
