ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Every player on the team scored as the No. 5 Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball team defeated Eureka 100-53 in the opening round of the 41st Annual Lopata Classic.
Sophomores
Anthony Przybilla and
Lleyton Thomas-Johnson led the Bears with career highs of 14 points each. Thomas-Johnson had five rebounds while Przybilla dished out three assists.
In the first 10 minutes of the first half, the Bears built up a 20+ point lead over the Red Devils. Senior
Will Grudzinski earned a quick foul and converted a pair of free throws for the first points of the game.
WashU went on a 5-0 run before Eureka put in its first points, a layup from Colin Delaere at 17:33. Sophomore
Connor May quickly responded with a 3-pointer, and junior
Ryan Cohen hit a pair of free throws, making it a 10-2 lead at 16:49.
With 12:46 on the clock, a layup from Thomas-Johnson pushed the Bears' lead into double digits, 16-6. Przybilla netted a layup on a pass from senior
Yogi Oliff, and Thomas-Johnson drilled a shot from distance, extending the lead to 21-6.
Przybilla slammed one home following a defensive rebound from Thomas-Johnson, and junior
George Gale had an offensive putback. First-year
Josh Kim hit a shot from behind the line, making it a 22-6 game for the Bears midway through the first half.
Eureka scored seven straight points to cut the Bears' lead to 28-13 at 8:21.
After slowly building back up to a 20+ point lead, WashU scored nine straight to take a 30-point advantage. Cohen hit a 3-pointer, Przybilla had an offensive putback, and junior
Lucas Vogel laid one in. Thomas-Johnson had a dunk off a steal for a 47-17 lead with 3:05 remaining.
The Bears held a lead of no fewer than 26 points through the remainder of the first half. First-year
Theo Rocca hit back-to-back 3-pointers for the final WashU points of the half, and the Bears went into the break with a 55-25 lead.
Senior
Calvin Kapral scored the first WashU points of the second half with a layup, and Grudzinski drilled a 3-pointer for a 60-27 lead.
A layup from Przybilla and a 3-pointer from Grudzinski extended WashU's lead to 36 points, 76-40, at the 13:31 mark.
First-year
Colby Smith scored his first-career points at the 11:00 mark after stealing the ball and laying one in on a fast break. First-year
Jack Cubbage also scored his first-career points with just under five minutes remaining, putting in a layup and converting the ensuing free throw after being fouled.
A free throw from sophomore
Yusuf Cisse put all the Bears in the points column of the box score and marked WashU's 100th point en route to the 100-53 victory.
The Bears were 36-for-67 (53.7%) from the field and shot 13-for-35 (37.1%) from 3-point range. WashU edged Eureka 40-27 on the boards, and the Bears scored 69 points off the bench.
WashU will take on St. Thomas (TX) tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Lopata Classic championship. The Celts defeated UW-Whitewater 81-73 in the first game of the Classic.
