RV Football Beats Elmhurst in Rainy Showdown

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The (RV) Washington University in St. Louis football team defeated Elmhurst 17-0 on Saturday in rainy conditions. The game was played until half time to be counted as an official game. The Bears are now 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in CCIW play.
 
WashU won the toss and elected to receive. After more than a two-and-a-half hour delay, the Bears and Bluejays kicked off.
 
On the kickoff, the Bears fumbled the ball, putting Elmhurst at the 12-yard line to begin the drive. The Bluejays, however, turned it over on downs.
 
Senior Fred Ware began the drive for the Bears, picked up five yards. Junior quarterback Levi Moore connected with junior Drew Bomar for 10 yards and a first down at the WashU 24. Ware picked up 12 yards for another first down and Moore hit junior Makael Carter for 15 yards and a first down to the 49.
 
A false start penalty pushed WashU back five yards before Ware picked up 11 yards for the 43. Moore found sophomore Lucas Blumenthal for an 11-yard pass and a first down at the 32 and Moore closed out the drive with a 32-yard touchdown. Sophomore Matias Adrogue's extra-point kick was good for a 7-0 Bears' lead with 8:02 remaining in the first quarter.
 
After Elmhurst was forced to punt, WashU began the final drive of the first quarter. Moore connected with sophomore Charlie Flowers for five yards and then found Bomar for five more yards followed by a three-yard pass.
 
Moore hit Carter for six yards before junior Matthew Kinoshita had three runs totaling 11 yards. Moore ran for five yards and a first down at the 47 and Kinoshita picked up another three yards. Moore hit Carter for a 24-yard run to the 20 and Kinoshita ran for nine yards followed by three to end the first quarter.
 
Following an incomplete pass to open the second quarter, Kinoshita ran for one yard and Moore ran for three yards to the four-yard line. Adrogue came out to kick a 20-yard field goal, making it a 10-0 Bears' lead.
 
The Bluejays punted on its next possession after reaching their own 30.
 
WashU began its next drive at its own 45. Ware started things with a four-yard run, followed by a six-yard run. Moore hit Blumenthal for a 45-yard touchdown pass on the next play and Adrogue's kick was good, putting the Bears ahead 17-0 with 9:53 remaining.
 
Right after that, lightning struck, delaying the game again for several hours. The teams came out to finish the quarter in rainy conditions to make the game official.
 
The Bears finished with 304 yards of total offense (124 passing, 180 rushing) while Elmhurst had 41 yards (30 passing, 11 rushing).
 
Moore went 10-for-11 for 124 yards and one touchdown. Kinoshita led the rushing game with 82 yards on 12 carries while Ware had 58 yards on eight carries. Moore finished with 40 yards on three carries.
 
Blumenthal led the receivers with 56 yards on two catches with a touchdown. Carter had 45 yards on three catches.
 
Defensively, senior Brady Willmer had six total tackles (three solo, three assists) while junior Spencer Snipe, senior Ryan Schmadtk and sophomore Aidan Hughes had two total tackles each (1 solo, 1 assist). Sophomore Ethan Venable also had two total tackles (1 solo, 1 assist) with one tackle-for-loss.
 
The Bears hit the road for the next two weeks, starting with No. 21 Wheaton next Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by Millikin on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.
