Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Harris' 23 Points Not Enough as No. 13 Women's Basketball Falls to No. 23 Carnegie Mellon

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Playing the early contest in their first full UAA weekend of the season, the No. 13 Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team dropped its Sunday contest to visiting No. 23 Carnegie Mellon, 86-67.

Sophomore Lexy Harris led in scoring for the Bears with 23 points and was one of four to reach double figures. Sophomore Alyssa Hughes added 15 points while both graduate Jessica Brooks and first-year Ava Blagojevich each scored 10.

To go along with her 10 points, Brooks grabbed 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.

WashU jumped out early taking an 8-3 lead just over two minutes into the contest. However, the Tartans took control of both ends of the court as their offense scored the next 27 points while their defense held the Bears scoreless for the final 7:57 of the period.

Hughes hit a layup to start the second quarter at 9:43 to break the drought with CMU still leading 30-10.

The Tartans would increase their lead back up to as many as 22 on a three pointer at  6:13 before the Bears cut their deficit down to just 15 with 3:36 remaining in the half on a layup by Harris. CMU settled in and headed into the locker room with a 45-26 lead.

The Bears came out of halftime pushing the offense and began to chip away at the Tartan lead. A layup by Brooks at 1:30 got WashU back within single digits at 58-50, but a quick pair of back-to-back free throws by the visitors allowed them to reextend their lead to 12 heading into the fourth quarter.

The final 10 minutes was the reverse of the third quarter. The Bears had outscored CMU 24-17 in the third period before the Tartans flipped the scoring around and WashU by the same 24-17 in the fourth.

The Bears were unable to get the lead back down to single digits while CMU returned to their 19 point, halftime lead at the final buzzer for the 86-67 win.

WashU hits the road for the first time in 2025 next weekend when it travels to Rochester for a Friday evening contest on Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT. They will then complete the weekend on Sunday when they visit Atlanta, Ga. for a contest with Emory on Jan. 26 with a 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT tip-off.
