NEW YORK, N.Y. – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team wrapped up action at the UAA Round Robin #1 on Sunday with a 3-0 sweep of Rochester at the John A. Paulson Center on the campus of NYU.
Trailing 3-2 early in the first set, WashU went on a 4-0 to take a three-point lead, one they would not give up. Leading 21-16 late, the Bears saw Rochester score the next four points to pull within one at 21-20. After trading the next two points, the Bears got kills from senior Zoe Foster, graduate Lily Steinbach, and a block from Steinbach and junior Sam Buckley to take the first 25-21.
The second set went nearly identical as the first with WashU taking a lead early in the set without giving up the lead the rest of the way. The Yellowjackets pulled within one point twice late again, but this time it was kills by senior Lucy Davis and Steinbach, with Buckley assisting on both, that gave the Bears the 25-22 set two win and match lead 2-0.
WashU got the third set started with six-straight points before taking an 18-4 lead midway through the set. Rochester would only get within 11 points on one occasion. A kill by junior Tori Taylor and a pair of sophomore Ellie Laird service aces closed out the set 25-10 and the conference sweep, 3-0.
Steinbach had the match-high in kills with 10 while hitting a strong .769. Buckley finished 37 of the Bears' 42 assists. Both senior Elise Gilroy and senior Jasmine Sells reached double-figure digs with 17 and 10, respectively.
WashU returns home this Wednesday, Oct. 2 when it welcomes Illinois College to the Varsity Gym. First serve with the Lady Blues is scheduled for 7 p.m.
