Softball Beats Grinnell, Greenville to Advance to NCAA Regional Final

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball won a pair of games on Saturday to advance to the regional final tomorrow against No. 10 Belhaven. WashU is now 28-11 on the season.
 
With the double-elimination format, The Bears will have to win two games tomorrow to win the regional. The first game tomorrow is slated for 11 a.m. followed by an if-necessary game.
 
Game 1: WashU 4, Grinnell 1
The Bears broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth inning. Brooke Capparelli reached base on a throwing error and advanced on sacrifice but from Maggie Baumstark. Erin Reardon bunted to the pitcher and then stole second.  Sydney Schneider struck out but reached base on a wild pitch, then advanced to second on a fielding error by first, allowing Capparelli to score. Natalia Pilpil then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Reardon for a 2-0 lead.
 
Grinnell put up a run in the bottom of the bottom. Sofia DiCarlo led off with a double to right center and Kyra Killion drew a walk. Following back-to-back strikeouts, Samantha Chu singled up the middle, scoring Lane Kohler who had come on to run for DiCarlo.
 
In the sixth inning, Kennedy Grippo drew a lead-off walk and moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Alexa Hanish. Ashley Kennedy followed with a double to left center, bringing in Grippo for a 3-1 lead.
 
The Bears posted one final run in the top of the seventh inning, starting with a single up the middle from Schneider. Pilpil followed with a single to center and both runners moved up on a ground out from Taylor Geluck. Grippo singled to center, scoring Schneider for the 4-1 edge.
 
Grippo finished 2-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and a walk. Both Reardon and Schneider were 2-for-4 and Kennedy finished 1-for-1 with one RBI.
 
First-year Maria Brooks earned her 10th win of the year in the circle, pitching a complete game with six hits, one run and six strikeouts.
 
Game 2: WashU 11, Greenville 4
The Bears quickly came out to score five runs in the top of the first inning. Reardon led off with a single to center and Schneider followed with a single to left center, advancing to second on the throw. Pilpil then laid down a bunt to the catcher and beat out the throw, allowing Reardon and Schneider to score the first two runs of the game.
 
Geluck doubled to left center to score Pilpil and moved up to third on a ground out from Grippo. Hanish singled to right field to bring home Geluck and give WashU a 4-0 edge. Capparelli drew a walk to load the bases and with two outs, Reardon drew a walk to score Hanish and make it a 5-0 game.
 
The Bears defense came up big in the bottom of the first inning to keep the Panthers off the board. With two outs, Valerie Greenley hit to third where Grippo fired a shot to Pilpil at first for the out, and Pilpil returned the throw to home for the double play to end the inning.
 
WashU's bats stayed hot, as the Bears put up two more run in the top of the second. Pilpil was hit by a pitch to lead things off and Geluck singled through the left side, prompting a pitching change for Greenville. Grippo grounded out, advancing the runners a base and Hanish singled through the left side to score Pilpil. Hanish stole second and Craycraft drew a walk, followed by another walk from Maggie Baumstark, scoring Geluck for a 7-0 lead.
 
The Bears scored three in the top of the third to make it a 10-0 game. Schneider reached base on an error and then stole second. Geluck drove her in with a double to center field for the 8-0 edge. With two outs, Hanish singled to left to score Geluck. Hanish advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on a Craycraft single to right field.
 
The Bears tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning. Reardon and Schneider drew back-to-back walks and Pilpil doubled to left center to put two runners in scoring position. Following a new pitcher, Geluck drove in Schneider with a ground out to short, making it an 11-0 game.
 
Greenville made things interesting in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs to stave off a run-rule. With one out, Emma Longcor reached base on a throwing error and Madi Case drew a walk. Josie Grunloh reached base on a fielder's choice and Natalee Moore singled up the middle to load the bases. Melissa Bernal reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Case and Grunloh scored on an error by third base. Sydnee Garrett drove in the final two runs with a double to center, making it 11-4.
 
Geluck went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored while Hanish finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Craycraft was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Pilpil finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
 
First-year Hattie Bond earned the win in the circle, pitching 3.2 innings of relief with four hits, two earned runs and a strikeout.
