CHICAGO, Ill. - The No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team was bounced from the NCAA Division III Championships, Saturday, May 11, in the regional final match against No. 2 University of Chicago, 5-0.
With the loss, WashU's record sits at 13-12, while the Maroons' record upped to 22-1.
Doubles
The Bears dropped all three doubles matches to face the 3-0 deficit as the match flipped to singles play.
Competing at No. 1 doubles, No. 8 sophomore
Colin Fox and senior
Gaurav Singh were upended by No. 6 Andrei Leonov and Pat Otero, 8-2.
Sophomore
Eric Kuo and junior
Scott Yamamoto fell short at No. 2 doubles, 8-5, against No. 24 Derek Hsieh and Robert Zhang.
Singles
At No. 3 singles, Singh was upended by Asokumar, 6-4, 6-3.
Kuo, competing and No. 4 singles, lost his match to Ajer Sher, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 1 singles, No. 2 singles, No. 5 singles, and No. 6 singles were all abandoned.
No. 23 Phillips dropped his first set to No. 6 Emil Grantcharov at No. 1 singles, 7-5, then the match was halted in the second, tied at 3-3.
Sophomore
Colin Scruggs, at No. 2 singles, won his first set, 7-6 (7-2), against No. 21 Hsieh. With Hsieh ahead 6-4 in the second, the match was abandoned.
Graduate student
Sergiu Celebidachi, playing at No. 5 singles, dropped his first set to Kelley Kane, 6-4, and was down 4-3 in the second before the match was halted.
Junior
John Fakouri, at No. 6 singles, fell in the first set, 7-6 (8-6), and was behind, 4-2, in the second frame.
WashU concludes its 2024 season with a record of 13-12, which included a runner-up finish at the 2024 National Indoors. Phillips (singles) and Fox / Singh (doubles) will continue their run in the postseason as they were selected to participate in the NCAA Division III Individual Championships, May 26-28 at Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.
