Softball Takes Two at NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team swept NYU on Saturday to go 3-0 in the series with one game left. The Bears are now 16-7 on the season with a 5-2 mark in UAA play.
 
Game 1: WashU 6, NYU 1
NYU got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Margaux Lesser led off with a single to right field and Nicole Cicchetti laid down a sac bunt to move lesser to second and she then advanced on the throw. Lizzy Smith doubled down the left field line to score Lesser for the 1-0 lead.
 
The Bears responded in the top of the second inning to tie things up. Kennedy Grippo hit a one-out single and Brooke Capparelli followed with a single. Maggie Baumstark reached base on an error by first, scoring Grippo.
 
WashU added five runs in the top of the fifth inning to go up 6-1. Natalia Pilpil hit a one-out double to right center and Taylor Geluck singled to the pitcher to put runners on the corners before stealing second. Alexa Hanish hit a two-out single to center, advancing to second on the throw and scoring Emily Talkow, who came on the run for Pilpil.
 
Grippo reached base on an error by short, scoring Geluck for a 3-1 edge. Grippo advanced to second on a wild pitch and both Hanish and Grippo scored on a double to center from Capparelli. Capparelli moved to third on a wild pitch and Baumstark drew a walk before second second. Capparelli scored on an error by the catcher to make it a 6-1 game for the Bears.
 
Capparelli went 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Grippo was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored while Pilpil went 2-for-4.
 
First-year Maria Brooks picked up her sixth win of the year in the circle, pitching a complete game with five hits, one run and three strikeouts.
 
Game 2: WashU 4, NYU 1
WashU scored the first run of game two. Erin Reardon reached on an error by short and then stole second. She moved up to third on a ground out by Sydney Schneider and then scored on a wild pitch.
 
The Violets tied things up in the bottom of the inning. Lesser was hit by a pitch advanced on a Cicchetti sac bunt. With two outs, Chloe Stone singled and advanced on the throw, scoring Lesser.
 
The Bears scored the go-ahead run in the top of the second inning. Payton Irwin led off with a single to left field and Capparelli reached base on an error by first. Baumstark but down a sac bunt to move the runners into scoring position and Irwin scored on a Reardon ground out.
 
WashU added its final two runs in the top of the sixth innings. Irwin led off with a single ahead and Baumstark followed with a single. Both runners moved up on an error by the catcher and Irwin went on to score on a sac fly from Reardon. Baumstark made it a 4-1 game, scoring on a Schneider single.
 
Irwin went 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Baumstark was 2-for-2 with one run scored. Both Pilpil and Geluck finished 1-for-3 and Reardon recorded two RBI and one run scored.
 
Jamie Burgasser improved to 4-2 in the circle, pitching a complete game with three hits, one run, no walks and seven strikeouts.
 
The Bears wrap up the series at NYU with an 11 a.m. ET game tomorrow.
