Softball Completes UAA Series Sweep of NYU

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team completed the series sweep of NYU on Sunday with an 11-1 victory in five innings. The Bears are now 17-7 on the season with a 6-2 mark in UAA play.
 
The Bears got on the board quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Natalia Pilpil hit a double to center and Taylor Geluck singled to center to put runners on the corners before stealing second. Ashely Kennedy drove in both runners with a double to right center and Payton Irwin brought in Kennedy with a double to right field to make it a 3-0 game.
 
WashU added four more in the top of the second inning. Maggie Baumstark bunted to the pitcher and scored on an Olivia Craycraft double to left center. Sydney Schneider brought in Craycraft with a sac fly to left. Pilpil singled through the left side and Geluck drilled a homer to left, making it a 7-0 game for the Bears.
 
In the top of the third inning, the Bears pushed across their final runs with another four-run outing.
 
Irwin drew a lead-off walk and stole second, followed by a Kennedy Grippo walk. Baumstark singled through the left side to load the bases and a Craycraft single to right field brought in Irwin and Grippo. Schneider drew a walk and Baumstark went on to score as Pilpil reached base on a fielder's choice. Geluck doubled to left to bring in Schneider for the final WashU run of the game.
 
NYU scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lizzy Smith led off with a single up the middle and Chloe Stone followed with a single up the middle as well. Madi Hand singled up the middle and advanced to second, but the Bears defense got Smith out at home. Mia Lemmon singled to the pitcher to score Stone for the 11-1 game.
 
Geluck went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Craycraft finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Baumstark also finished 2-for-3 and scored two runs and Pilpil was 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
 
First-year Hattie Bond notched her third win of the season in the circle, pitching a complete game with six hits, one run, no walks and four strikeouts.
 
WashU hosts Case Western Reserve University next weekend in a four-game series, starting on Friday with a 3 p.m. game which will serve as the program's Mental Health Game.
