One Up, One Down for Baseball Against No. 15 Case Western Reserve

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Washington University in St. Louis baseball team continued its weekend University Athletic Association (UAA) slate against No. 15 Case Western Reserve University, Saturday, April 27. WashU won game one, 6-2, before falling to the Spartans in game two, 8-3. 
 
After today's results, WashU's record sits at 24-14-1 (8-6-1 UAA), while CWRU owns a record of 29-9 (12-3 UAA). 
 
Game One: WashU 6, No. 15 Case Western Reserve 2 
 
WashU took game one by a final score of 6-2. 
 
The Bears outhit the Spartans by a final tally of 15-9. 
 
Sophomore Shane Pellegrino paced WashU's offensive efforts with his 4-for-5 showing at the plate. Pellegrino recorded two RBI and a triple. 
 
Senior Clayton Miller, first year Carson Cleage, graduate student Sam Polk, and first year Miles Birke each notched two hits. 
 
On the mound, first year Anderson Gomez got the start. Gomez tossed four innings, allowed two runs, and fanned a pair. 
 
Junior Hank Weiss fired the final five frames out of the WashU bullpen. Weiss got the win (4-2), did not surrender a run, and struck out seven. 
 
The Bears scored a pair of runs, on two hits, in the top of the first. Pellegrino led off the contest with a triple to left. Following the triple, senior Harry Mauterer got plunked by an offering, then later stole second to set up second and third, with one out. Cleage laced a single through the right side to push across WashU's first run as Pellegrino scored. 
 
Still in the first, junior Brandon Buday reached on a fielder's choice to second, which allowed Mauterer to scamper home on the play. After the top of the first, WashU held the 2-0 cushion. 
 
The Bears added to its lead in the second by scoring two runs. Polk began the inning with double to right, then Birke drew a walk. Senior Magnus Dunn laid down a sacrifice bunt to push runners to second and third, with just one down. Pellegrino grabbed an RBI single to left on the first pitch he saw as he drove in Polk. Mauterer then followed with an infield RBI single to short to score Birke. Heading to the bottom of the second, WashU held the four-run, 4-0, lead. 
 
Case Western Reserve tallied a run in the third and a run in the fourth to trim its deficit to two, 4-2, as the game progressed to the fifth. 
 
Clayton Miller, on a 2-0 count, found a pitch in his wheelhouse and did not miss it. Clayton Miller belted his fifth round tripper of the season on a home run to left. With Clayton Miller's long ball, the Bears extended its lead to three, 5-2, in the top of the fifth. 
 
The score remained 5-2, until the top of the eighth. Polk and Birke produced back-to-back singles to begin the eighth. Dunn put down a sacrifice bunt advance the runners 90 feet. With runners on second and third, Pellegrino singled to short, which drove in Polk. Going to the bottom of the eighth, the Bears held the 6-2 cushion. 
 
Weiss sealed the game with a flyout to center as WashU won game one of the day by a final score of 6-2. 
 
Game Two: No. 15 Case Western Reserve 8, WashU 3 
 
The Spartans took the night cap by a final tally of 8-3. 
 
CWRU outhit the Bears by a final count of 15-8. 
 
Sophomore Connor Lindsey had the best evening at the dish, turning in a 3-for-3 performance, including his first multi-home run game of his career. Dunn added a pair of hits, while Cleage, graduate student Evan Minarovic, and Pellegrino each collected one hit. 
 
Junior Will Henkel logged the start on the mound. The Southpaw threw the first four innings and was charged with three runs. First year Owen Block and first year Townsend Stevenson each saw action out of the bullpen. 
 
Lindsey got the scoring started in the top of the third on a leadoff home run to left field. Lindsey's four-bagger gave WashU the 1-0 advantage. 
 
Case Western Reserve answered with a run in the bottom of the third and two runs in the fourth to snag the 3-1 cushion as the game progressed to the fifth. 
 
The Bears responded with a run in the fifth on a Dunn single to center. Lindsey, who doubled earlier in the frame, scored on the RBI to trim its deficit to one, 3-2. 
 
The Spartans secured a pair of runs in the fifth to own the three-run, 5-2, cushion. CWRU then tallied one run in the sixth to open up the 6-2 advantage. 
 
Lindsey grabbed his second solo home run in the seventh. This time, Lindsey sent a long drive over the left center field fence. After the homer, the score stood at 6-3, in favor of Case Western Reserve. 
 
CWRU scored one in the seventh and one in the eighth to grab the five run, 8-3, lead. 
 
WashU could not muster the comeback as the Spartans took game two by a final score of 8-3. 
 
WashU and No. 15 CWRU will close out the four-game series, tomorrow, Sunday, April 28 with a single game. The series finale from Nobby's Ballpark is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.
